Job summary

Mass General Brigham’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital seeks an EH&S Program Coordinator to supervise the Safety and Compliance program within Environmental Health & Safety. The role coordinates CMS/Joint Commission Life Safety and Environment of Care programs with Clinical, Real Estate Facilities, and Engineering teams.

The position reports to the EH&S Manager, covers multiple locations, and supports hazard controls, training, and documentation to maintain regulatory compliance and patient

Qualifications

  • BS in environmental health & safety or related field with 3–5 years of experience.
  • MS in health, safety, risk or public health preferred.
  • Knowledge of Building Engineering Systems and trades.
  • Experience reading blueprints/floorplans.
  • Proficiency in reading chemical hazard information and safety training.
  • Ability to wear respirators and PPE; strong training delivery skills.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise the Safety and Compliance program within EH&S.
  • Coordinate CMS/Joint Commission Life Safety and Environment of Care compliance programs.
  • Lead planning and tracking of EH&S programs across Brigham Health campuses.
  • Collaborate with Clinical, Real Estate Facilities, and Engineering teams.
  • Develop safety surveys, incident investigations, and data documentation.

EH&S Program Coordinator-Clinical and Support Services / 40 Hour / Days

This critical safety position will supervise the Safety and Compliance program within the Environmental Health & Safety department and support key CMS/Joint Commission Life Safety and Environment of Care compliance programs. The position will work closely with Clinical, Support Services, Real Estate Facilities, Engineering departments to accomplish requirements of the role.

The position reports to the EH&S Manager and ultimately to the Director of Environmental Health & Safety, coordinates up-to two other technical staff and is responsible for leading planning and tracking the BWH environmental health, safety and permitting programs with an emphasis on CMS/Joint Commission, OSHA, DEP/EPA, and the local town/city permits while standardizing programs with Brigham Health main campus.

The role will also lead or participate in a range of other critical safety and compliance program elements that directly impact the quality and safety of patient care and research as well as regulatory risk to the enterprise.

Ultimately, this position supports and collaborates closely with all Environmental Health & Safety Department (EA) activities and team members who aim to manage risks of workplace injury and illness, ensure business continuity and maintain compliance with pertinent EH&S codes, standards and guidelines. These EH&S activities include identifying hazards and safety issues; developing, implementing and monitoring effective hazard controls and solutions; and assuring continued effectiveness through safety systems development and continual process oversight and improvement.

The position plans, coordinates and performs general safety functions that include conducting safety surveys, investigating incidents, exposure monitoring, managing hazardous materials, assisting in responding to various emergencies, training, and collecting and managing data and documentation. This position will cover assignments at all Brigham and Women’s locations.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science or equivalent degree in the environmental health & safety or related field with 3-5 years of experience required.
  • Master of Science in health, safety, risk or public health related field preferred.
  • Knowledgein Building Engineering Systems and Trades
  • Experience reading blueprints/floorplans
  • Basic competency in general chemistry
  • Capable of performing tasks while wearing a respirator and/or other personal protective equipment.
  • Professional certifications (e,g. CSP, CIH, CHMM, HEM) preferred
  • OSHA HAZWOPER Certification preferred
  • RCRA/DOT Certification preferred
  • Experience with CMS/Joint Commission Codes Preferred
  • Ability to read sources of chemical hazard information, recognize risks and apply pertinent safety practices
  • Presentation skills; proficiency in verbal and written English language communication; ability to deliver training presentations to varied audiences of varied sizes
  • Ability to interact effectively with people individually and in small groups;
  • Must handle conflict tactfully and constructively
  • Efficient team meeting management and facilitation
  • Flexibility and teamwork: this department has a broad set of responsibilities requiring all technical staff to multitask and support others
  • Computer competency with general office software and apps
  • Physically able to perform tasks such as walking, standing, climbing, lifting, carrying
  • Must be able to wear a respirator and other personal protective equipment

Working Conditions and Environment
  • Work under the supervision of the Safety & Environmental Health & Safety Manager and Department Director
  • Will handle hazardous chemical materials, including spills
  • Occasional work in environments with biological, chemical, or physical hazards
  • Must wear personal protective equipment as assigned
  • Must travel to off-site facilities periodically to respond and/or investigate incidents or support program needs
  • Must be capable of frequent multitasking
On-call position
  • Periodically required to work off-hours; occasionally required to respond to urgent matters with short notice on regular and off-hours;
  • Must take on-call duties in a regular schedule rotating with other department staff on regular and off-hours.
  • Must travel to off-site facilities periodically to respond and/or investigate incidents or support program needs

The posted salary reflects the starting range for this position. Actual compensation will be based on the selected candidate's qualifications, including experience, education, and relevant skills.
