Job description

  • Plan, direct, and oversee personnel, financial, and operational activities of the department
  • Review and certify engineering plans
  • Provide technical expertise and recommendations
  • Oversee projects and staff; assign and review work; conduct performance evaluations
  • Manage the departmental budget through expenditure monitoring and financial planning
  • Procure and manage inventory, supplies, and equipment
  • Develop and implement departmental strategic plans
  • Manage department projects, including goals, timelines, delegation, work review, and project reports
  • Maintain and update department policies and procedures
  • Investigate complaints and assist customers with concerns
  • Conduct internal and external public relations activities, including media appearances, community events, board and committee service, and commission meetings
  • Provide engineering expertise to permit holders, homeowners, and the general public
  • Review permits, recommend engineering plans, and testify in court to ensure legal compliance
Requirements
  • Master's degree in environmental health sciences, natural sciences, engineering, or public health sciences
  • Experience supervising staff, including assigning work, monitoring progress, providing feedback or training, conducting performance appraisals, and administering discipline
  • Experience developing and maintaining departmental budgets
  • Experience obtaining and maintaining state or federal grants
  • Experience with strategic planning in a government, public health, or healthcare setting
  • Driver's license
