Job summary

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Division of Plant Industry, is seeking an Environmental Specialist I to support fruit fly detection activities that protect Florida’s agriculture.

The role involves building, servicing, and placing detection traps; conducting plant pest detection surveys; collecting and submitting samples for laboratory analysis; inspecting plant material and commodities; and assisting with pest eradication and special programs.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent plus 6 months experience in apiculture, environmental protection, regulation, health, natural sciences, agriculture, or engineering; or associate degree (2 years).
• Valid Class E driver license required (if applicable).
• Must obtain fruit fly certification within 6 months of appointment.

Responsibilities

• Build, service, and place detection traps; conduct plant pest detection surveys.
• Collect and submit samples for laboratory analysis; inspect plant material and commodities.
• Assist with pest eradication and special programs; travel and fieldwork in varied conditions.
