Environmental Field Technician (Environmental Remediation) - Southeastern NY (Tri-State Project Sites)

Tetra Tech – Whitehouse Station, NJ has a full-time remote field position available as an Environmental Field Technician for Tetra Tech SWE. You will be responsible for collecting environmental samples, completing operations and maintenance (O&M) activities for environmental remediation systems, recording field measurements and data at landfills and industrial facilities, sampling and inspecting landfill gas and liquids collection and control systems, conducting specialized testing, and performing maintenance activities at our clients’ facilities. The majority of these facilities are located in New York and New Jersey.

- Plan and perform office, testing, or field assignments working largely independently.
- Plan and prepare for various work assignments, maintain field and test equipment, document field services, and perform field monitoring and analyses in accordance with Tetra Tech SWE-established protocols.
- Operate field equipment and construction equipment.
- Work at landfills, hazardous waste sites, contaminated sites, and/or other sites where heavy equipment, contamination, or other health hazards may exist. Assist with technical research as required.
- Provide construction services as required.
- Perform other assignments as requested by management.
- Implement and direct safe work practices on field assignments.
- Support management in project assignments.
- Occasional overnight travel may be required.
- Work effectively and efficiently as both a team and alone.
- Walk long distances, up and down steeply sloped landfills and outdoor terrain.
- Work in extreme (hot and cold) weather conditions safely.
- Lift a minimum of 50 pounds on a non-consistent basis.
- Pass a company-paid, baseline health physical and drug screening, as required.
- Workload may be erratic, though mostly 40 hours/week.
- Other duties as needed.
Your Qualifications:
- Minimum High School Diploma and 1 year of general working experience.
- Preferred A.S. or B.S Degree in environmental science or other natural sciences (geology, biology, ecology, etc.).
- OSHA 40 Hour HAZWOPER preferred, with current eight-hour OSHA HAZWOPER refresher preferred.
- Demonstrated strong mechanical aptitude required.
- Ability to learn and work with complex field monitoring equipment including but not limited to flame-ionization detectors (FIDs), photo-ionization detectors (PIDs), explosive gas detectors, water level detectors, pH/temperature/conductivity meters, and other typical environmental monitoring equipment.
- Ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
- Ability to learn general groundwater, soil gas, soil, and air sampling techniques including applicable environmental and health & safety regulations and regulatory requirements.
- Familiarity with operations and maintenance techniques for landfill gas and landfill fluids collection systems.
- Ability to build and retain mutual relationships with clients.
- Some heavy equipment operation, HDPE pipe fusion experience a plus.

- While performing duties, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk. Frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; and taste or smell. Occasionally required to sit. Must be able to regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently up to 25 pounds, and occasionally a minimum of 50 pounds on a non-consistent basis. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
- The employee may work in the field for extended periods and must be able to work in personal protective equipment (PPE), including respirator (on rare occasions), and have physical clearance for PPE. Ability to drive and operate a vehicle is required; an annual medical exam may be necessary.
- The work environment may vary, involving potential exposure to physical and chemical hazards, heat, cold, and other adverse conditions. Hearing protection may be necessary.
This offer is contingent upon:
- Successful completion of a background investigation, with your consent and cooperation.
- Maintaining a safe driving record as per Tetra Tech’s Vehicle Safety program; a motor vehicle (MVR) check will be evaluated.
- Passing a urinalysis drug screen and quarterly random drug screens, as Tetra Tech enforces a zero-tolerance policy.
- Successful completion or proof of a valid 40 Hour HAZWOPER and/or OSHA 10 Hour Construction certificate.
- Passing a comprehensive medical examination.
Pay: $24-27 per hour, with overtime at 1.5x rate for hours above 40/week, depending on skill, region, and experience.
