GAI Consultants is seeking an Environmental Specialist 1 to lead wetland delineations and other environmental resources field investigations for electric transmission and energy-related projects. The successful candidate will enjoy working in a challenging, fast-paced, and team-oriented environment that utilizes their related experience to develop professionally and grow in today's global environment. Job Duties:
- Lead environmental field surveys including wetland and stream delineations, endangered species surveys, environmental inspections, and compliance monitoring.
- Data collection using handheld GPS.
- Prepare wetland delineation and other environmental reports.
- Must be flexible; weekly travel will be expected (up to 90%). Fieldwork in rough terrain, exposed to weather and outdoor hazards. Travel to remote areas driving on rough roads in various weather conditions. Hiking 5+ miles per day and carrying up to 40 pounds is required.
Qualifications:
- BS/MS degree in Biology, Environmental Science, or related field.
- Proven experience in conducting wetland delineations in OH, WV, PA, VA, and surrounding states. Wetland delineation training and certification (PWS/WPIT) are strongly preferred.
- Thorough knowledge of/experience with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Wetland Delineation Manual (1987) and Regional Supplements.
- Familiarity with local flora of the Northeast and/or Midwest; ability to identify upland and wetland vegetation using field guides and dichotomous keys.
- Knowledge of Section 401/404 permitting; experience with ORAM and HHEI/QHEI evaluations is a plus.
- Experience conducting avian and botanical surveys is a plus.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office; ArcGIS experience is a plus.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
- Valid Driver's License required.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to hike moderate distances in unimproved terrain and remote areas.
- Work in variable weather and environmental conditions, often long hours.
- Lift/move up to 40 lbs.
- Commitment to safety in these conditions is essential.
Additional Characteristics and Requirements:
- Demonstrates critical thinking, works on small or portions of larger projects, assists Task Managers, and proactively implements QMS.
- Minimum 4+ years of experience.
- Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Sciences or similar.
- Working towards leading field studies; capable of generating well-written, technically sound documents; research applicable regulations; extensive knowledge of wetland delineations and ecological surveys; may specialize within disciplines.
- Works as part of a team, coordinates work, assists in schedule and budget planning.
- Assigns and oversees tasks, maintains communication with Task Managers, and assists in proposal preparation.
- Possesses effective communication skills; interacts with clients, Project Managers, and staff effectively.
