Job description

GAI Consultants - Environmental Specialist 1

GAI Consultants is seeking an Environmental Specialist 1 to lead wetland delineations and other environmental resources field investigations for electric transmission and energy projects. The successful candidate will work in a challenging, fast-paced, team-oriented environment, utilizing their experience for professional growth. This position offers a flexible Hybrid workplace and a sign-on bonus.

Job Duties:
  • Lead environmental field surveys including wetland and stream delineations, endangered species surveys, environmental inspections, and compliance monitoring.
  • Collect data using handheld GPS devices.
  • Prepare environmental reports, including wetland delineation reports.
  • Travel weekly (up to 90%) for fieldwork in rough terrain, exposed to weather and outdoor hazards. This includes hiking 5+ miles daily, carrying up to 40 pounds, and driving on rough roads in various weather conditions.
Qualifications:
  • BS/MS in Biology, Environmental Science, or related field.
  • Experience in wetland delineations in OH, WV, PA, VA, and surrounding states; certification (PWS/WPIT) preferred.
  • Knowledge of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Wetland Delineation Manual and Regional Supplements.
  • Familiarity with local flora of the Northeast and/or Midwest; ability to identify vegetation using field guides and dichotomous keys.
  • Understanding of Section 401/404 permitting; experience with ORAM and HHEI/QHEI evaluations is a plus.
  • Experience with avian and botanical surveys is advantageous.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office; ArcGIS experience is a plus.
  • Ability to work independently and in teams.
  • Valid Driver's License required.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to hike distances in unimproved terrain and remote areas.
  • Work in variable weather and environmental conditions, often long hours.
  • Lift/move up to 40 lbs.
  • Commitment to safety in field conditions.
Additional Characteristics:
  • Demonstrates critical thinking, works on small or parts of larger projects, and assists Task Managers.
Experience & Education:
  • 4+ years of relevant experience.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Sciences or similar.
Technical & Project Management:
  • Leading field studies and data collection.
  • Producing well-written, technical documents with minimal assistance.
  • Researching and applying environmental regulations.
  • Knowledge of wetland delineation, restoration, ecological surveys, and endangered species.
  • Potential to specialize and receive technical training.
Team & Communication Skills:
  • Coordinate work with team members.
  • Assist in scheduling, budgeting, and client interactions.
