Job summary

Washington State Department of Ecology seeks a Science and Engineering Unit Supervisor (Environmental Engineer 5) for the Nuclear Waste Program in Richland, WA. Telework options are available with at least one day per week in the office.

Lead a multidisciplinary team, oversee tank waste retrieval, groundwater remediation, and regulatory permitting under CERCLA and RCRA. Requires PE licensure and 5+ years of relevant experience.

Qualifications

• Registration as a Professional Engineer in the state of Washington or another state based on registration requirements equivalent to those in Washington.
• Five (5) years of experience in environmental engineering, including at least one (1) year of investigating and cleaning up contaminated sites.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with DOE and contractors on engineering issues related to tank waste retrieval and CERCLA/ RCRA actions.
• Provide professional engineering review and comment on waste-site covers, groundwater/soil remediation designs, and CERCLA units.
• Promote coordinated remedial approaches between CERCLA and TSD units in line with MTCA, CERCLA, and RCRA requirements.
• Plan, assign and oversee work of the Science and Engineering Unit; coach staff and ensure high-quality work.
• Resolve science and engineering issues by integrating staff expertise, regulatory requirements, and practical solutions.
• Coordinate with the Cleanup Section Manager, Project Managers, Lead Hydrogeologist, and Lead Chemist to ensure well-planned and resourced delivery.
