About the Role:
Our client is seeking an Environmental Engineer to support environmental compliance activities at a large chemical manufacturing facility. This role will focus on ensuring compliance with federal and state environmental regulations, permits, consent decrees, hazardous and non-hazardous waste requirements, environmental reporting, inspections, audits, and regulatory agency coordination.
Responsibilities:
- Ensure compliance with applicable federal and state environmental regulations, consent decrees, permits, and reporting requirements.
- Prepare and submit routine environmental reports, including hazardous waste, TSCA, and EPCRA reporting.
- Prepare and submit reports such as Biennial Hazardous Waste Reports, Tier II Reports, and TRI Form R submissions.
- Support hazardous and non-hazardous waste management and compliance activities.
- Work with operational departments to communicate environmental compliance requirements and support waste management activities.
- Provide guidance related to central accumulation areas, satellite accumulation areas, and hazardous and non-hazardous waste management.
- Prepare and submit environmental permit applications and permit modifications as required.
- Interface with regulatory agencies to support understanding of and compliance with applicable environmental regulations.
- Participate in environmental audits, inspections, and compliance reviews.
- Collect environmental samples and complete associated reporting and documentation.
- Complete chains of custody and ensure appropriate identification and storage of environmental samples.
- Provide environmental training to personnel as needed.
- Perform and support environmental compliance inspections.
- Support special environmental assignments and projects as assigned by leadership.
Qualifications:
- Master's degree in an environmental-related discipline.
- Experience in environmental engineering, environmental compliance, environmental science, chemical engineering, civil engineering, or a related STEM discipline.
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary and diverse team environment.
- Ability to support a fast-paced, large chemical manufacturing environment.
- Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite and environmental industry-related reporting and monitoring software.
Required Experience:
- Five years of experience in state environmental reporting, permit maintenance, and environmental compliance.
- Experience with hazardous waste management and compliance monitoring.
- Experience with universal waste management and compliance monitoring.
- Experience with non-hazardous waste management and compliance monitoring.
- Experience interacting with environmental regulatory agencies and supporting regulatory compliance requirements.
- Exposure to Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (VDEQ) personnel and regulations.
- CHMM certification, EIT/EI certification, or PE licensure is highly desirable.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Wastewater experience.
- Previous experience supporting government customers or government-regulated programs.
- Environmental permit writing experience.
- Government compliance experience.
- Experience working in manufacturing, chemical processing, or other highly regulated industrial environments.
