Job summary

Global Cellulose Fibers is seeking an Environmental Engineer in Columbus, MS to support environmental compliance and continuous performance. The role reports to the Environmental Manager and involves developing and administering environmental processes, programs, and leadership across the facility.

Key duties include managing air, wastewater, solids, and chemicals programs, coordinating regulatory testing, and preparing environmental reports.

Qualifications

• B.S. degree in Environmental or Chemical engineering or related field or equivalent experience.
• 2–5 years in environmental compliance preferred.
• Knowledge of environmental regulations; plant operations experience desirable.
• Experience with PI Process Book, Proficy Plant Apps and DAS preferred.
• Pulp and paper industry experience is a plus.
• Demonstrates leadership, safety focus and initiative.

About The Role:

The Environmental Engineer position supports the mill’s environmental compliance assurance programs while promoting continued environmental performance. This position reports to the Environmental Manager and is responsible for supporting, developing and administering the facility Environmental processes, programs, and leadership as well as assuring our compliance with Local, State and Federal requirements and Laws.

As one of the largest softwood pulp producers in the world, the Columbus Mill produces bleached softwood pulp for use in paper and specialty products such as absorbent personal care products, pharmaceuticals and photographic-based papers. The Columbus Mill is a fully integrated pulp manufacturing facility, including multiple process lines of wood handling, pulping, and power and recovery boilers. Our Environmental Engineer will:

• Promote an atmosphere of safety excellence through leading by example and intervening when necessary to correct behaviors.
• Provide visible and active leadership in delivering excellent safety results.
• Complete safety audits to ensure internal and external resources comply with safe work practices.
• Report and communicate safety and performance measurements against objectives.
• Interface directly with state regulatory agencies and community members to represent the mill within the community and region.
• Participates in environmental compliance audits and assists the sites in closing the open action items.
• Prepare, review and update various environmental reports.
• Interact with and provide regulatory guidance to mill operations, maintenance, and management personnel on a day-to-day basis.
• Manage environmental program(s) as assigned: air, wastewater, solid waste, and/or chemicals.
• Participate as a member of EHS department; maintaining strong relationships with other business unit personnel as well as operating and maintenance department leaders.
• Coordinate and communicate with operating departments regarding regulatory concerns/support, including periodic training for salaried and hourly teams on environmental compliance as needed.
• Work with mill engineering and operations to evaluate capital projects for potential permitting needs.
• Serve on a weekend duty rotation. Work with team for 24-hour coverage during annual outages.
• Provide environmental outage coordination, both for routine and annual outages.
• Coordinate regulatory compliance testing activities.
• Fill in for Environmental Manager when needed.
• Act as owner’s representative for contractors providing services within EHS department.
• Participate in and lead in the development of Environmental Management System procedures for water, waste, and air management.
• Actively use and improve upon existing systems for managing daily activities, including development of standard operating procedures (SOP).
• Initiate and facilitate problem solving.
• Understand and promote Manufacturing Excellence (ME) tools and processes; participating in and leading ME improvement initiatives in the department.
• Drive improvement projects, audit systems, and achieve excellent results.
• Facilitate the implementation of new procedures and controls required by the change in facilities, products, and corporate policies and procedures.

About You: Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• B.S. Degree in Environmental or Chemical engineering, environmental sciences or related technical field, or equivalent work experience in a manufacturing environment
• 2-5 years of experience in the area of environmental compliance is preferred
• Knowledge and experience with practical application of environmental regulations desired
• Plant Applications and PI Process Book experience preferred
• Strong computer skills including proficiency with all Microsoft Office applications, experience with PI process book, Proficy Plant Apps, and DAS preferred.
• Experience in the pulp and paper industry is preferred
