Responsibilities

  • Manage day-to-day environmental compliance across three facilities.

  • Support air, water, stormwater, wastewater, SPCC, and waste permitting activities.
  • Interface with regulatory agencies and maintain compliance documentation.
  • Coordinate audits, inspections, and corrective actions.
  • Maintain ISO 14001 programs and emergency plans.
  • Partner with plant leadership to resolve issues and drive improvement.
  • Provide environmental training and community outreach support.
  • Identify opportunities to improve environmental footprint across sites.
  • Occasional on-call support for environmental matters at the Decatur facility.

Environmental Engineer Job Summary

A Fortune 150 steel tube manufacturer is seeking an Environmental Engineer to manage environmental compliance and regulatory programs across three Alabama manufacturing facilities in Birmingham, Decatur, and Trinity. This high-visibility role combines permitting, reporting, auditing, field support, and continuous improvement. The right candidate will be proactive, detail-oriented, comfortable on the production floor, and skilled at building strong relationships with operations and EHS teams.

  • Manage day-to-day environmental compliance across three industrial manufacturing facilities.
  • Prepare and submit required environmental reports, including DMR, TRI, Tier II, and other applicable regulatory filings.
  • Support air, water, stormwater, wastewater, SPCC, and waste permitting and compliance activities.
  • Interact professionally with environmental regulatory agencies and demonstrate compliance with permits, regulations, corporate standards, and environmental practices.
  • Coordinate environmental audits, inspections, investigations, corrective actions, and recordkeeping.
  • Maintain ISO 14001 programs, emergency contingency plans, and environmental compliance documentation.
  • Partner with EHS Coordinators, Safety Technicians, plant leadership, and operations teams to resolve issues proactively.
  • Provide environmental training and guidance to employees and support community outreach initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities to improve operational performance, environmental culture, and the facilities' environmental footprint.
  • Provide occasional on-call phone support for environmental matters, primarily involving the riverfront Decatur facility.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • At least 2 years of environmental compliance experience involving air, water, waste, pollution control, and/or wastewater operations in an industrial manufacturing setting.
  • Working knowledge of environmental requirements involving air, water, EPCRA, DOT, and hazardous waste.
  • Experience preparing regulatory reports and maintaining accurate compliance documentation.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and communicate effectively with plant employees, site leadership, and regulatory agencies.
  • Ability and willingness to travel regularly between the Birmingham, Decatur, and Trinity facilities, with occasional overnight travel.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without current or future employer sponsorship.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with NPDES and air permitting, SPCC plans, DMR reporting, TRI, Tier II, hazardous and non-hazardous waste, or regulatory agency interaction.
  • Experience implementing, maintaining, or auditing an ISO 14001 environmental management system or equivalent EMS.
Schedule, Travel & Compensation
  • Typical schedule: 40 hours per week, generally 6:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. or 7:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.; some flexibility is available once a consistent schedule is established.
  • Regular weekly travel between Birmingham, Decatur, and Trinity; occasional overnight stays may be required.
  • Mileage, hotel, and meal expenses are reimbursed when applicable.
  • Base salary target: $90,000-$100,000, depending on experience.
  • Additional profit-sharing bonus (15-20% depending on annual profitability across all divisions)
  • ROA bonus opportunity; historical payout has been approximately 17%-19%
