Job summary

Kids for the Future is seeking a seasonal environmental education instructor to lead lessons on ecology, conservation, sustainability, and outdoor skills. You will supervise instructors, ensure activities run on time, and serve as the on-site liaison for staff and partners.

The role requires at least a high school diploma and 1 year of related experience, with strong leadership, safety, and communication skills for a dynamic youth program environment.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or Equivalent.
• Minimum 1 year as an Environmental or Outdoor Education instructor or closely related field.
• Strong instructional and leadership abilities.

Responsibilities

• Lead the delivery of environmental education lessons on ecology, conservation, sustainability, outdoor skills, and team building.
• Supervise and mentor a team of environmental education instructors during program hours.
• Serve as the on-site primary contact for instructors to ensure activities run on schedule.
• Assist with training, onboarding and scheduling of instructional staff.
• Ensure safety and well-being of all participants and respond to incidents per protocol.
• Foster a positive, inclusive and engaging learning environment for diverse students.
• Communicate progress, challenges and staffing needs to Head of Environmental Education.
• Maintain teaching materials, equipment and supplies; recommend needed supplies to Head of Environmental Education.
• Assist in cleaning and upkeep of camp facilities (Lodge, Barn, Bathrooms, Kitchen, cabins).
• Care for and maintain campgrounds (raking, weeding, digging).
• Represent the organization professionally to visiting teachers, parents and partners.
• Adjust programming as needed due to weather or group needs.

Description

• Lead the delivery of environmental education lessons on topics such as ecology, conservation, sustainability, outdoor skills, and team building.
• Supervise, mentor, and support a team of environmental education instructors during program hours.
• Serve as the primary point of contact for instructors on-site, ensuring activities run on time and according to schedule.
• Assist with training, onboarding, and scheduling of instructional staff.
• Ensure the safety and well-being of all participants and respond to incidents or emergencies according to protocol.
• Foster a positive, inclusive, and engaging learning environment for students of diverse backgrounds.
• Communicate regularly with the Head of Environmental Education to report progress, challenges, and staffing needs.
• Maintain and manage teaching materials, equipment, and supplies. Making recommendations for needed supplies to Head of Environmental Education.
• Assist in the cleaning and upkeep of camp facilities. Ie. Lodge, Barn, Bathrooms, Kitchen, and cabins.
• Assist in the care and maintenance of campgrounds. Ie raking, weeding, digging, etc.
• Represent the organization professionally to visiting teachers, parents, and community partners.
• Adjust and adapt programming as needed due to group needs, weather, or other variables.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or Equivalent.

Minimum Experience required:

• 1 year as an Environmental or Outdoor Education instructor or a closely related field.

Skills Required:

• Leadership & Mentoring: Proven ability to lead teams, provide feedback, and support peers in a positive and professional manner.
• Environmental Education Expertise: Strong understanding of environmental science, sustainability, and outdoor education principles.
• Instructional Skills: Ability to deliver dynamic, age-appropriate lessons that engage youth in outdoor learning.
• Ability to hike, lift program materials, and work outdoors in various weather conditions.
• Program Coordination: Capable of organizing schedules, managing supplies, and supporting the logistics of field-based programming.
• Problem-Solving: Calm and resourceful in managing unexpected challenges or schedule changes.
• Communication: Excellent interpersonal skills with youth, colleagues, teachers, and site partners.
• Safety Awareness: Skilled in risk management and emergency response in outdoor settings.
• Inclusivity: Commitment to equity, accessibility, and cultural sensitivity in education.
• Ability to meet Council requirements for driving council vehicle.

Minimum License, Certifications- Have or obtain during first 30 days

• Valid California driver’s license and an insured vehicle in good working order.
• First Aid/CPR certification (Wilderness First Aid a plus).
• Must pass a background check and adhere to organizational youth safety guidelines.
• Mandated Reporter Certifcation
• Riverside County Food handlers Card

Strong Candidates will possess professional certifications from organizations specializing in outdoor, environmental, nature based, and instructional fields.
