Position Core Profile: The Environmental Crew Leader is responsible for the daily supervision and leadership of environmental construction crews and subcontractors, ensuring all work is performed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project specifications and regulatory requirements. This hands-on role requires operating heavy equipment, maintaining job site safety, overseeing project execution for tasks including demolition, earthwork, restoration, and stormwater management, and serving as the primary field contact for clients and stakeholders. The Crew Leader plays a critical role in developing field teams, driving high-impact, sustainable results, and supporting continuous improvement across projects.

Accountabilities

• Crew and Site Management: Supervise daily activities of internal crews and subcontractors on environmental job sites; Assign and delegate tasks based on project plans, crew skill levels, and operational needs; Mentor and develop Environmental Technicians II and III for future leadership roles; Ensure timely delivery and use of materials, tools, and equipment at each job site; Maintain high standards for job site organization, cleanliness, and efficiency; Support hiring, onboarding, and development of field staff through coaching and training.
• Project Execution & Equipment Operation: Operate and oversee the safe use of heavy equipment such as excavators, loaders, and skid steers; Execute work involving demolition, erosion control, grading, stream and wetland restoration, and stormwater BMPs; Monitor productivity and labor hours to ensure alignment with project timelines and budgets; Resolve field-level challenges and adapt work plans to changing site conditions.
• Safety and Compliance Oversight: Enforce strict adherence to company and OSHA safety protocols; Conduct job site safety briefings and daily inspections; Ensure all team members use required PPE and follow approved work plans; Participate in incident investigations and corrective action plans; Ensure all work complies with environmental permits and regulatory requirements; maintain documentation for inspections and audits.
• Client and Team Communication: Act as on-site representative for project leadership and communicate daily updates to clients and stakeholders; Coordinate with project managers to confirm scope execution, changes, or site-specific concerns; Address client concerns and professionally represent the company in meetings, site walks, and regulatory inspections.
• Documentation & Reporting: Complete daily field reports including work performed, equipment usage, materials delivered, and site conditions; Utilize company-approved digital tools for field reporting, timekeeping, and project documentation; Maintain accurate timekeeping records for crew and equipment; Track and report progress, delays, and material needs to ensure project accountability.

Requirements

Experience and Qualifications:

• Education: High school diploma or equivalent preferred
• Experience: 2-3 years of experience in environmental or civil construction; Experience with field operations in demolition, stormwater systems, wetland restoration, or earthwork required
• Leadership Experience: 1+ years of leadership experience preferred
• Licensing/Certification: Valid state driver's license required; DOT medical card or equipment certifications a plus; Heavy equipment certification or vocational training preferred
• Skills:

Working Conditions And Availability Disclosure

• Requires frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, crouching, and reaching, as well as regular use of hands and arms to perform manual labor and operate equipment. Must be able to lift and carry materials and tools weighing up to 50 pounds, with heavier lifting being team-assisted or reasonably accommodated.
• Work is regularly performed outdoors, exposing the employee to a variety of weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, wind, and sun. Potential exposure to noise, dust, pollen, and various plant and chemical materials commonly used in environmental construction.
• May require working on uneven terrain, near traffic, or within active construction zones. Use of personal protective equipment (PPE), such as gloves, safety glasses, ear protection, and boots, is required.
