Job summary

NREP in Columbus, OH seeks an Environmental Compliance Specialist to ensure plant operations meet federal, state, and local environmental requirements. You will develop environmental programs, oversee the Industrial Wastewater Program, and coordinate with regulators and internal teams.

Qualifications

  • Requires a minimum of 2 years of Environmental Health work in a manufacturing facility.
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health or related field may compensate for some experience.
  • Experience operating industrial wastewater pretreatment systems and knowledge of wastewater treatment principles.
  • Ability to conduct basic laboratory testing and interpret results.
  • Experience with Federal/State agencies (OSHA, EPA/DEP) and related regulations.
  • Experience with Hazardous Waste Management and permitting for Air, Stormwater, and Industrial Discharge.
  • Certifications in EHS programs are preferred.
  • Proficient computer skills: Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, Word.
  • Strong reading comprehension and attention to detail for documentation and compliance.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and handle challenges.
  • Bilingual English & Spanish is highly preferred.

Responsibilities

Job description

The Environmental Compliance Specialist, located in our Columbus, OH plant, is responsible for ensuring that the facility complies with local, state, and federal environmental regulations/agencies by developing and implementing environmental programs and overseeing our Industrial Wastewater Program. You will research environmental risks, investigate complaints, and develop strategies to control pollution, manage hazardous materials, and improve overall environmental quality.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Industrial Wastewater Treatment: Will oversee all aspects of the Industrial Wastewater System, including operating/monitoring, sampling & recordkeeping, maintaining/troubleshooting, and compliance of systems and programs.
  • Inspections and audits: Conduct regular inspections of facilities and processes to identify and correct potential environmental hazards.
  • Risk assessment: Identify and evaluate potential health and environmental hazards and assess the effectiveness of control mechanisms.
  • Regulatory compliance: Ensure adherence to federal, state, and local environmental, health, and safety laws.
  • Emergency preparedness: Play a role in emergency response planning and disaster recovery efforts.
  • Program development: Create, implement, and monitor Environmental Health policies and programs.
  • Training and education: Develop and provide best practices to employees on topics such as emergency response and regulatory requirements.
  • Reporting: Maintain records and prepare reports for regulatory compliance.
Required Experience/Qualifications:
  • A minimum of 2 years of Environmental Health work experience in a manufacturing facility is required. A bachelor's degree in a related field (such as Environmental Health) may help compensate for some experience.
  • Experience operating industrial wastewater pretreatment systems, including
  • Knowledge of wastewater treatment principles, including pH adjustment, chemical precipitation, and oil separation
  • Ability to conduct basic laboratory testing and interpret results
  • Experience working with and reporting to Federal and State (OSHA, EPA/DEP, etc.) agencies, including a solid understanding of their associated regulations and standards
  • Experience with Hazardous Waste Management, including permitting for Air, Stormwater, and Industrial Water Discharge
  • Certifications in Environmental Health & Safety related programs preferred
  • Intermediate computer skills, including, but not limited to, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, and Word
  • Exceptional reading comprehension and attention to detail to manage documentation and ensure compliance
  • Strong critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills to address unique environmental challenges
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to grow and accept challenges
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Bilingual (English & Spanish) is highly preferred, but not required, to present information clearly and train our diverse workforce
