Job summary

Clean Harbors is seeking an Environmental Compliance Manager to oversee day‑to‑day regulatory functions at operating facilities in the United States.

The role focuses on ensuring adherence to federal, state, and local environmental and health/safety regulations, with duties spanning permit applications, audits, and liaison with regulators.

Qualifications

  • BS/BA degree required in Environmental Science, Engineering or a related field.
  • 2+ years of environmental compliance experience required.
  • Knowledge of EPA laws/regulations required.
  • RCRA 40 CFR hazardous waste knowledge required.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct formal and systematic reviews of facilities to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Identify problems and recommend corrections; prioritize and follow up on non‑compliance areas.
  • Advise management on procedures to correct or minimize non‑compliant activities.
  • Apply for environmental permits and maintain renewal and reporting schedules.
  • Prepare and maintain environmentally related plans and procedures for facilities.
  • Prepare reports and documents for regulatory agencies and management.
  • Provide environmental training as required.
  • Coordinate with regulators and contractors on all related projects and activities.
  • Support facility inspections and environmental audits by customers.
  • Negotiate permit terms and respond to regulatory changes impacting operations.
  • Assist in investigations of significant incidents and required notifications.

The Environmental Compliance Manager manages day to day regulatory functions at Clean Harbors and Safety‑Kleen operating facilities.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct formal and systematic reviews of the facility to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations for environmental affairs and health and safety.
  • Identify problems and recommend corrections; prioritize and follow‑up on corrections regarding areas of non‑compliance or potential non‑compliance.
  • Advise corporate and facility management regarding procedural and operational measures to be taken to correct or minimize non‑compliant activities regarding environmental regulations.
  • Apply for environmental permits and maintain a schedule for renewals, reporting, and provisions of all environmentally related permits.
  • Prepare and maintain environmentally related plans and procedures for facilities.
  • Prepare reports and documents as required by regulatory agencies and corporate and facility management.
  • Prepare and provide environmental related training.
  • Serve as liaison between facilities and outside contractors, and regulatory personnel on all environmentally related projects and activities.
  • Coordinate and accompany regulatory personnel during all facility inspections. Coordinate environmental audits of facilities by customers.
  • Act as a liaison with agency regulators and negotiate terms favorable to the organization regarding legal agreements, permit conditions, and proposed regulations.
  • Respond to significant accidents, incidents, and complaints and provide guidance to operational teams. Prepare and submit all required notifications/reports and participate in management team investigations as needed.
  • Monitor regulatory changes to ensure compliance with upcoming changes in federal, state, and local rules and regulations.
  • Provide guidance to sales, field personnel, and customers concerning federal, state and local environmental regulations.
  • Perform audits of external facilities to ensure they are properly permitted for use and operating in compliance.
  • Perform other duties and tasks as assigned by management and will be required by the needs of the Clean Harbors business.
  • Routine travel to facilities.
Qualifications
  • BS/BA (required)
  • BS/BA in Environmental Science or Engineering (preferred)
  • 2+ years of environmental compliance experience (required)
  • Knowledge of and environmental protection agency (EPA) laws/regulations (required)
  • RCRA 40 CFR hazardous waste management knowledge (required)
  • Excellent communication, writing and presentation skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
