Woodard & Curran has an opportunity for an Environmental Chemist capable of performing environmental verification and validation of inorganic and organic chemical analytical data. This role will conduct data validation and associated activities in support of an environmental remediation program for a group of clients. The position will employ multiple chemical techniques and validation/verification methodologies on environmental samples related to site characterization, site remediation, environmental permits, effluent waters, waste disposal, and general project support. The individual will utilize data management systems to manage samples/data from beginning to end and will write quality assurance/quality control reports.

The selected candidate will report directly to Project Managers in our National Environmental Remediation Practice and work directly with a diverse and talented group of engineers and scientists at the firm. The ideal candidate is a mid-level chemist with strong technical experience delivering high-quality remediation and consulting services to projects located across the firm’s geography and core markets. The successful candidate will be an energetic, motivated, growth-oriented professional with an ability to work independently as well as lead multi-disciplined project teams.

Candidate should be a self-starter and possess strong analytical, field, and writing skills to support a wide range of science and engineering projects. Candidates must also have excellent communication skills combined with leadership ability, a positive attitude, and ability to work both independently and within teams.

Travel:

This position may require occasional travel to support project needs across our nationwide office network, including Montana, California, New York/New Jersey, and New England locations. Travel may involve field support, laboratory audits, project meetings, or training sessions. While most work can often be completed remotely or from a local office, candidates should be open to short-term travel as needed to support project timelines and client requirements.

• Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) sites where laboratory analytical validation supports environmental compliance and corrective actions.
• Numerous state-led remediation sites where groundwater, soil, and air sampling are used to assess environmental impact.
• In these settings, the chemist's role is to ensure the reliability, accuracy, and defensibility of analytical results through laboratory data validation, often in compliance with EPA or state-specific guidance (e.g., EPA CLP or regional data validation guidelines).

What will you be doing at Woodard & Curran?

• An Environmental Chemist will assist with environmental/engineering tasks for site investigation and remediation projects. Position responsibilities will support the characterization of contaminated sites, remediation system design and operation, system monitoring, data management/tracking and reporting. Data management, report writing and interaction with project staff will play an important role in the candidate’s success. Potential assignments in this role may include:
• Review and validate laboratory data packages by United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) guidance to ensure compliance with published analytical methods and usability of environmental data.
• Collaborate and review on environmental project QAPPs
• Compose, review, and critique technical reports
• Upload laboratory analytical data to specific client and regulatory databases
• Assist with and prepare portions of written reports, tables, spreadsheets and presentations
• Prepare technical memoranda and white papers to be included in client deliverables.
• Implement innovation and automation tools produced by the team.
• Task management: Manage workloads assigned by chemistry staff within stipulated time. Should be flexible with working hours to support other geographical regions
• Proficient in stage 2 data validation. Experience in stage 3 validation is a value add for this role, but not mandatory.
• The project chemist will support quality assurance/quality control, data management, data analysis, and various analytical chemistry aspects of environmental investigations for our clients.
• The candidate will have the opportunity to work on a wide range of projects, developing their technical skills as a chemist while exploring new interests as well.
• Candidate should be a self-starter and possess strong technical and writing skills to support a wide range of science and engineering projects. A successful candidate will also be detail-oriented, have excellent verbal communication skills combined with a positive attitude, and ability to work both independently and within teams.

What You Will Need To Succeed:

• Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, Environmental Science, or another related discipline.
• 3+ years of relevant experience in a Quality control laboratory and or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
• Detail-oriented with excellent organizational, writing, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Excellent attention to detail and time management.
• Must be able to organize and prioritize to accommodate crucial deadlines
• Knowledgeable of computer software programs, including spreadsheets, databases, and other Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, Access)
• Experience with inorganic and organic laboratory methods, including PFAS, QA/QC elements, and record keeping.
• Experience with environmental data validation practices/policies/procedure,s especially the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency National Functional Guidelines for Data Review.
• Experience with environmental databases such as ERPIMS, EQuIS, ADR.net, or FUDSChem, or data management software such as MS Access and SQL.

$60,000 - $85,000 a year

This position’s anticipated pay range is provided, and final salary (exempt) or hourly pay (non-exempt) will be dependent on years of experience, skills, education, and geographic differentials to reflect cost of labor differences between markets. For hybrid employees, the pay range is based on the office they are associated with, while for remote employees, it is based on their home office location.

Group A - $70,000 - $85,000

Group B - $65,000- $85,000

Group C - $60,000 - $80,000
