We are currently seeking candidates for the EPA Denver, CO area facility/laboratory, with future opportunities anticipated elsewhere.

Job Description

ICF is looking for passionate, dedicated Environmental Biologists to join our diverse team of scientists. The Environmental Biologist will work closely with other scientists, chemists, risk assessors, and project managers to perform biological testing on hazardous waste, water, soil, sediment, tissue, vegetation, and other media, and to prepare and review human health and ecological risk assessments for releases of hazardous substances at Superfund sites.

What You Will Do
  • Participate in planning activities, including meetings, conference calls, and site visits, to support project objectives, study designs, and schedules.
  • Prepare project-specific work plans, SAPs, and QAPPs in accordance with EPA guidance.
  • Research and review applicable regulations, guidance documents, data calculations, species-specific toxicity values, literature, and databases; perform statistical data analysis.
  • Perform biological testing on hazardous waste, water, soil, sediment, tissue, vegetation, and other media, using techniques such as aquatic and sediment toxicity testing, bioaccumulation, seed germination, microbial, viral, and other biological tests. Conduct reference toxicity testing alongside site-specific testing.
  • Conduct biological assessments including biodiversity studies, bioaccumulation, immunoassays, gene expression, toxicity testing, specimen preparation, ecological risk assessments, and microbial assessments.
  • Support the preparation and review of biological and human health data and assessments, including ecological and human health risk assessments, biodiversity, and endangered species assessments.
What You Must Have
  • Bachelor's or Master’s degree in biology or a related field, or equivalent technical experience.
  • 4+ years of experience in biological testing on hazardous media, following EPA and industry methods.
  • Familiarity with biological test organisms such as Ceriodaphnia dubia, Chironomus tentans, Hyalella azteca, Pimephales promelas, Oncorhynchus mykiss, and various plant species.
  • Experience in ecological and human health risk assessments at Superfund and contaminated sites.
  • Ability to follow SOPs, safety policies, and quality control procedures.
  • Excellent communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences, sometimes in stressful settings.
  • Teamwork and project management skills, with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to obtain access to Federal facilities.
  • OSHA 40-Hour HAZWOPER certification.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in biology or related field.
  • Experience with biological testing and risk assessments at mining sites or sites with emerging contaminants like PFAS.
  • Strong analytical skills with GIS, Monte Carlo, and risk modeling tools.
  • Leadership skills and experience working at Federal facilities.
