Qualifications

Job description

The EHS Manager is responsible for leading the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) programs within a pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical, API, specialty chemical, or highly regulated manufacturing environment. This role provides strategic and operational leadership to ensure the protection of employees, contractors, visitors, products, and the environment while maintaining compliance with applicable EHS regulations, industry standards, and current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP).

The EHS Manager serves as the site subject matter expert for EHS and partners closely with operations, engineering, facilities, quality, and technical teams to proactively manage risks associated with pharmaceutical and chemical manufacturing processes, hazardous materials, potent compounds, and complex production operations.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of EHS management systems in support of pharmaceutical and chemical manufacturing operations.
• Partner with Manufacturing, Process Engineering, Quality, Validation, and Facilities teams to integrate EHS requirements into pharmaceutical production and chemical processing activities.
• Develop and execute EHS strategies that support business objectives while maintaining safe and compliant pharmaceutical manufacturing operations.
• Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, and other applicable regulations governing pharmaceutical, API, and chemical manufacturing facilities.
• Lead process safety and risk management initiatives associated with chemical reactions, hazardous materials, flammable solvents, potent compounds, and manufacturing equipment.
• Oversee industrial hygiene programs, including exposure monitoring and assessment for APIs, HPAPIs, solvents, powders, cleaning agents, and other manufacturing‑related hazards.
• Manage environmental compliance programs related to air emissions, hazardous waste, wastewater, stormwater, and chemical storage within a regulated manufacturing environment.
• Lead incident investigations involving manufacturing processes, laboratory operations, utility systems, and chemical handling activities, ensuring robust root cause analysis and CAPA implementation.
• Champion a strong safety culture throughout production, warehouse, laboratory, maintenance, and engineering functions.
• Conduct and oversee risk assessments, including JHAs, PHAs, HAZOPs, FMEAs, and PSSRs for pharmaceutical and chemical manufacturing processes.
• Provide technical leadership for EHS programs, including Hazard Communication, Process Safety Management, Lockout/Tagout, Respiratory Protection, Confined Space Entry, Contractor Safety, and Chemical Hygiene.
• Ensure all EHS training programs adequately address the risks associated with pharmaceutical manufacturing, chemical handling, hazardous materials management, and regulated operations.
• Support new product introductions, facility expansions, process transfers, and capital projects by ensuring EHS risks are identified and mitigated during planning and implementation.
• Oversee contractor safety programs for construction, maintenance, utilities, and manufacturing support activities.
• Lead EHS audits and compliance assessments focused on pharmaceutical manufacturing, chemical processing operations, and associated support functions.
• Manage Safety Data Sheet (SDS) programs and chemical inventories to ensure compliance with Hazard Communication requirements.
• Chair site safety committees and drive employee engagement initiatives focused on reducing operational and process safety risks.

Education & Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health & Safety, Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related discipline.
• Minimum 7-10 years of progressive EHS experience within pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical, API, fine chemical, specialty chemical, or similarly regulated manufacturing environments.
• Demonstrated experience supporting chemical manufacturing processes, hazardous materials management, and process safety programs.
• Strong understanding of risks associated with pharmaceutical production, chemical processing, solvent handling, potent compounds, and laboratory operations.
• Experience conducting process risk assessments and managing EHS programs in GMP‑regulated facilities.
• Professional certifications such as CSP, CIH, CHMM, or equivalent strongly preferred.
• Experience supporting HPAPI containment programs, industrial hygiene monitoring, chemical exposure assessments, and engineering controls is highly desirable.
• Experience with sustainability, ESG, environmental permitting, and environmental compliance programs within manufacturing environments is a plus.
