Job summary

University of Maryland Medical System is seeking an Environmental Services Worker to perform cleaning and related tasks across patient rooms, nursing units, offices and clinical areas to maintain a sanitary environment.

Under supervision, duties include replenishing supplies, waste disposal, safety compliance, and operation of cleaning equipment. Requires a High School Diploma / GED or 1 year of housekeeping experience; English proficiency is essential.

  • Attends annual Compliance Program training (HIPAA).
  • Performs related work as assigned.

Job description

Job Requirements

Under regular supervision performs cleaning and other environmental services for all internal areas of system facilities including Patient Rooms, Nursing Units, Offices, Clinical Areas, Waiting Area, Lobbies, Lounges, Restrooms, Corridors, Elevators and Stairwells to ensure a clean, neat and sanitary environment, according to established performance standards.

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.

  1. Replenishes or replaces expendable supplies, such as soap, toilet tissue, and paper towels in a timely manner.
  2. Empties trash containers in assigned areas, replaces liners and cleans the exterior of trash containers with damp cloth.
  3. Transports trash and hazardous waste to appropriate disposal area.
  4. Observes safety precautions and established safety procedures for performing work and using equipment and cleaning supplies. Reports safety hazards according to policies and procedures, and to Supervisor or designee. Notes any required repairs (painting, plumbing, carpentry, or electrical) and reports needed repairs to Supervisor or designee.
  5. Cleans patient rooms, lobbies, hallways, offices, work areas and other internal areas of the facility, including:
    1. Clean and sanitize restrooms with emphasis on sink, mirrors, urinals, bright work, tubs, shower stalls, fixtures, door partitions, walls, floors, vanities, shower curtains, light fixtures, dispensers, and trash cans.
    2. Clean light fixtures, walls, cabinets, cabinet glass, trash receptacles (inside and outside), furniture, polish furniture, blinds, telephones, refrigerator (outside), doors & frames, lamps, counter tops (labs also), stainless steel surfaces, ledges, sills, partitions, water fountains, and desk floor pads. Remove fingerprint smudges, dust high/low including sprinklers, light fixtures, ceiling vents, ceiling lights and door vents; remove dirt from wall surfaces with a germicidal solution, or other chemical agents. Damp wipes with germicidal solution, horizontal surfaces including bedside stands, window sills, over bed tables, dressers, chairs, ottomans, desks, telephones, bookcases, tables, credenzas, file cabinets, ledges, etc.
    3. Clean and make all beds to include stretchers.
    4. Sweep and vacuum floor and carpet surfaces.
    5. Damp or wet mop floor surfaces with germicidal solutions.
    6. Shampoo carpets and upholstery; vacuum elevator tracks (inside and outside), dispose of trash (inside and outside).
    7. Operate mechanical equipment such as buffers (high and low speed), automatic scrubbers, pressure washers, vacuum cleaners, shampooer, extractor, burnisher and steam machine, baseboard machine and restroom cleaning machine. Use equipment properly and maintain assigned equipment in good safe working order.
  6. Attend annual and periodic mandatory Compliance Program training including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy training.
  7. Perform related work as assigned.
Work Experience

High School Diploma / GED or one (1) year facility housekeeping experience is required.

  1. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but involved written or oral instructions.
  2. Ability to follow the communication standards to resolve conflicts.
  3. Ability to follow both written and oral instructions.
  4. Ability to write legible and detailed information.
  5. Ability to sign (name) on reports and/or other departmental documentation.

  9. Ability to maintain strict patient confidentiality and respect for patient’s privacy.
  10. Ability to successfully operate a variety of high powered cleaning equipment.
  11. Ability to operate all electronic bed tracking systems.
  12. Ability to withstand frequent exposure to water and disinfectant chemicals.
Compensation & Benefits
  • Pay Range: $17.00 - $24.60
  • Hourly Shift Differential
