Qualifications

  • Minimum age over 16 with some high school level education.
  • Must obtain YMCA Swim Instructor certification after hire.
  • CPR and First Aid certifications required.

Responsibilities

  • Shadows and prepares swimming lessons according to YMCA guidelines.
  • Builds relationships with students and parents.
  • Maintains records and attends training.

Skills

Ability to instruct swimming techniques
Ability to lift equipment
Ability to lift a small to average size child

Education

Some high school level education

General Function

The Entry Level Swim Instructor shadows and assists with instruction and motivation for students in swimming classes.

Education/Experience/Training/Certifications
  • At minimum, some high school level education (over 16+ years of age)
  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid certification and Emergency Oxygen from Red Cross
  • Obtains YMCA Swim Instructor certification or equivalent at first certification course offered by YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit after hire.

Job Duties & Responsibilities
  • Shadows and prepares swimming lessions according the YMCA guidelines
  • Builds authentic relationships with students and parents
  • Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules as appropriate
  • Maintains records as required and attends staff meetings and trainings
  • Performs other assigned duties as directed by Supervisor
Abilities & Skills
  • Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques.
  • Ability to lift equipment, and to lift a small to average size child.
