Job summary

The Surgical Assistant at Harbour View Medical Center provides support under the surgeon, performing hand scrub, gowning and gloving, assisting as first or second assistant, and upholding sterile technique in the operating room.

Requires high school diploma, completion of a Surgical Assistant Program, CPR/BLS; CSA/NSAA/NCCSA; Virginia Board of Medicine registration if based in Virginia; and at least one year healthcare experience preferred.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent (required).
• Completion of a Surgical Assistant Program (required).
• BLS Basic Life Support preferred; must obtain prior to direct patient care.
• CSA/NSAA/NCCSA certification required (NBSTSA/NSAA/NCCSA).
• If employed in Virginia, must be registered with the Virginia Board of Medicine (required).
• One year health care experience (preferred).

Responsibilities

• Performs surgical hand scrub, gowning, and gloving; assists as first/second on cases.
• Protects patient information and participates in Universal Protocol procedures.
• Communicates with the circulating nurse regarding instruments and sterility.
• Assists with OR case preparation and aseptic setup.
• Assists with patient positioning, prepping, and draping.
• Under supervision, may insert secondary trocars and assist with wound closure.
