Job summary

Schnabel is seeking an Entry-Level Geological/Mining/Civil Engineer to join our Mining team in Marquette, MI. You will develop field and analytical skills while contributing to geotechnical investigations and reporting.

Ideal candidates have ABET-accredited degrees and 0–2 years of experience, with readiness to travel and work on diverse sites, including surface and underground mines. The role offers growth in a respected, ESOP-driven firm.

Qualifications

  • ABET-accredited bachelor’s degree in geology, geological engineering or mining engineering.
  • 0–2 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to work independently or on a team.
  • Willingness to perform field work and travel out of state for several weeks at a time (up to 70%).
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and work on construction sites in rugged environments.
  • Willingness to learn new software for modeling and reporting.
  • MSHA/HAZWOPER or related training will be provided.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in planning and performing geotechnical investigations including work plans and field programs.
  • Document and report geotechnical investigation results; log soil/rock borings and perform in-situ tests.
  • Install monitoring wells and geotechnical instrumentation; conduct field tests and collect samples.
  • Assist in field work at inactive mine sites and surface/underground operations.
  • Prepare field and safety documentation; assist in reports, plans, and specifications.
  • Create basic plans/figures using GIS, Google Earth and AutoCAD.

Job Description:

The Marquette, MI office of Schnabel Engineering is seeking an Entry-Level (Staff) Geological/Mining/Civil Engineer to join our growing Mining team. We are looking for a motivated candidate with an interest in developing both field and analytical skills, a passion to continue to develop as a professional, and a desire to be part of a strong team.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Assist in planning and performing geotechnical investigations, including preparing work plans, scopes, and field programs.
  • Document and report the results of geotechnical investigations, for example:
    • Log soil and rock test borings
    • Perform in-situ testing (such as packer / hydraulic conductivity)
    • Install monitoring wells and geotechnical instrumentation
    • Single and multi-well testing
    • Collect laboratory testing samples of soil, rock and water
    • Lidar scanning
    • Prepare field reports
  • Assist in field work at inactive mine sites, surface and underground
    • Site photographs
    • Sketches of structures and conditions
    • Notes and documentation of observations by the team
    • Prepare field and safety gear
  • Research of geology and historical mines
  • Assist in Engineering geologic mapping
  • Assist in ground support calculations
  • Perform geotechnical instrumentation monitoring.
  • Perform construction observation, including materials testing and field documentation.
  • Assist in preparing reports, plans, and specifications, including construction documents.
  • Create basic plans and figures using GIS, Google Earth, and/or AutoCAD.

Required Skills/Experience:

  • A bachelor's degree in geology, geological engineering or mining engineering from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • 0-2 years of r elevant professional experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Willingness and ability to perform field work and travel out of state for several weeks at a time. (Travel can be up to 70% of time in any given year and varies seasonally).
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and be physically able to negotiate construction sites, enter trenches, climb ladders, and work outside.
  • Ability to work in a variety of rugged environments including high-altitude basins, underground abandoned mines, and in a wide range of weather conditions.
  • Ability to drive company vehicles on 4x4 roads in mountainous terrain.
  • Willingness to work at both surface and underground mines, including active and abandoned mine sites. MSHA, HAZWOPER and other required training will be provided. Night shift work may be required.
  • Willingness to learn new programs and software applications for modeling.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Positive attitude and motivated to work well in a team environment.
  • A strong work ethic and the desire to perform professionally at a high level.

Preferred Skills/Qualifications:

  • Qualified to acquire or has already acquired the GIT/EIT certification

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to pass a background check which may include criminal history, motor vehicle record, and credit check
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment screening

The compensation range for this position is between $62,400 to $86,000. Compensation for this position may vary based on geographic location and other factors. We remain committed to providing competitive and equitable compensation to all employees, regardless of their location.
