Department Overview
The DeKalb Police Department consists of 70 sworn and 30 civilian personnel. The department consists of four divisions: Patrol, Administrative Services, Community Support Services, and Investigations. The Department is staffed with a Chief, a Deputy Chief, 4 Commanders, 12 Sergeants, 55 Police Officers, and 2 Contracted Social Workers that responded to 44,763 calls for service in 2023. The department has a lot to offer including bike patrol, motorcycle unit, K9, special operations group (SOT), drug and gang unit, school resource officers, domestic violence unit, community policing and CIT officers. The City of DeKalb is located 60 miles west of Chicago and 30 miles southeast of Rockford. We are the home of the second largest university in the State of Illinois – Northern Illinois University.
Residency Requirement
Residency requirement after 15 months of employment. 40-mile radius from the DeKalb Police Department at 700 W Lincoln Hwy, DeKalb, Illinois 60115.
Salary and Benefits
• Salary Range: $78,644-$109,345

Selection Process
The selection process includes submission of an application, written exam, oral interview, background investigation and polygraph exam. Psychological and medical exams are completed upon conditional offer of employment. Offers are conditioned upon the successful completion of the POWER test at the academy.
