Job summary

The United States Army Mid-Atlantic Recruiting Battalion is seeking individuals for the position of Horizontal Construction Engineer (12N). In this role, you will operate bulldozers, graders, and other heavy machinery to complete construction projects.

You will undergo extensive training, including Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training, to prepare for a career that provides housing, medical benefits, and opportunities for civilian employment in construction.

Qualifications

  • Applicants must first take the ASVAB to identify strengths and suitable Army jobs.
  • 10 weeks of Basic Combat Training and 9 weeks of Advanced Individual Training required.
  • Interest in operating heavy construction equipment and working outdoors.

  • Analyze information on grade stakes and place them.
  • Drive bulldozers and other heavy equipment to level earth.

Overview

Horizontal construction engineers use bulldozers, cranes, graders and other heavy equipment to move tons of earth and material to complete construction projects for the Army.

Horizontal Construction Engineer (12N)
Job Duties
  • Analyze information on grade stakes and place them.
  • Drive bulldozers, road graders, and other heavy equipment to level earth.
  • Clear, grub, strip, excavate, backfill, stockpile, and push a scraper with a tractor crawler.
  • Cut and spread fill material with a scraper.
  • Transport heavy construction equipment with a tractor‑trailer.
  • Assist in the performance of combat engineer missions.
Requirements

Applicants must first take the ASVAB, a series of tests that helps identify strengths and suitable Army jobs.

Training

Job training requires 10 weeks of Basic Combat Training and nine weeks of Advanced Individual Training. Training includes classroom instruction and field, on‑the‑job instruction.

Compensation

Total compensation includes housing, medical, food, special pay, and vacation time.
