Job summary

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory in Idaho Falls is seeking an Activity Estimator to join the Waste Programs Team at the Naval Reactors Facility. You will author activity estimates for radioactive waste and develop models for non-standard waste containers, ensuring compliance with DOT, NRC and facility criteria.

The role requires a Bachelor's (or Master's) in a technical field, experience with nuclide distributions and Excel, and the ability to modernize estimation processes.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related technical, engineering or science field (or Master's).
  • Experience calculating radiological source terms.
  • Familiarity with nuclide distributions.
  • Experience with Micro Shield.
  • Intermediate to advanced statistical analysis.
  • Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Radiation Worker Qualification.

Responsibilities

  • Author activity estimates (source terms) for radioactive material, low-level waste and mixed waste, ensuring regulatory compliance.
  • Create eDocs associated with activity estimates.
  • Develop methods and models for non-standard waste containers.
  • Maintain nuclide distributions for onsite radioactive waste.
  • Maintain Excel workbooks used in activity estimates.
  • Oversee and maintain manuals used by activity estimators.
  • Review transportation and shipping controls in technical documents.
  • Modernize and improve the activity estimating process.

Job Description

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is seeking an Activity Estimator to join the Waste Programs Team at the Naval Reactors Facility in Idaho.

  • Author activity estimates (source terms) for radioactive material, low-level waste, and mixed waste to ensure compliance with Federal Regulations (i.e. DOT, NRC) and to validate waste meets disposal facility criteria.
  • Author eDocs associated with activity estimates.
  • Develop methods and models for non-standard waste containers.
  • Develop and maintain nuclide distributions for radioactive waste generated on-site.
  • Develop and maintain excel workbooks used in activity estimates.
  • Oversee and maintain Manuals used by activity estimators.
  • Oversee work document revisions, including Transportation and Shipping manuals and forms.
  • Review technical work documents for transportation and shipping controls.
  • Modernize and innovate the activity estimating process.
Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill

Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in a related technical, engineering or science field; or Masters degree from an accredited college or university in a related technical, engineering or science field.

Preferred Skills
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Nuclear, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering.
  • Experience calculating radiological source terms.

Pay Range

$63,900.00 - $97,800.00 annually Salary information provided is a general guideline only. Annual salary is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is operated for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) by Fluor Marine Propulsion, LLC (FMP), a wholly owned subsidiary of Fluor Corporation. Naval Nuclear Laboratory personnel are FMP employees who work at four DOE facilities: Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory, Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory, Kenneth A. Kesselring Site, and Naval Reactors Facility, and at the U.S. Department of Defense-owned Nuclear Power Training Unit-Charleston. FMP employees also have an established presence at numerous shipyards and vendor locations. For nearly 70 years, the Naval Nuclear Laboratory has developed advanced nuclear propulsion technology, provided technical support, and trained world-class nuclear operators to ensure the safe and reliable operation of our nation's submarine and aircraft carrier Fleets. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is a national asset solely dedicated to the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program.
