  • The City is offering a Sign-On Bonus for Bus Mechanics: $500 with first paycheck and 2% of gross earnings during first year of employment at first anniversary.
  • Candidates can complete up to 20 ASE Tests to earn up to an additional $5.00 per hour.
  • Late night and weekend work earns an additional $1.00 per hour.
  • Snap On and Milwaukee tools provided to all mechanics.
  • Uniforms and Laundry Service provided.

WORK SCHEDULE:
Monday through Friday, rotating shifts of 1:30pm to 10:30pm and 4:30pm to 1:30am; occasional Saturdays.
This position is eligible for overtime.
In addition, a shift differential of $1.00/hour will be paid for working the following hours:
  • Monday – Friday: 6:30 PM until 4:00 AM
  • Saturday – all day (24 hours)

Job Summary

Under immediate direction and in compliance with straightforward and standardized policies and procedures, performs manufacturer specified preventive maintenance services and safety checks on Transit and Service vehicles. Repairs and/or replaces vehicle parts and components as needed. Documents all maintenance and repairs by completing a check sheet for each service provided as well as inputs service and repair data into the into the fleet management system. Secures the necessary repair parts from the parts room. Assists other mechanics with assignments such as fluid and filter changes, change tires, exhaust system components, driveline components, brakes and suspension repairs, basic electrical repair, engine tune-ups, and basic manufacturer maintenance services. Responds to basic field service calls as needed. Assists in cleaning and organizing of the shop area as well as maintaining shop equipment.All tools and equipment provided. Uniforms & laundry service, steel-toe shoes, safety glasses, ear plugs (as needed), and gloves provided.

Essential Functions

  • Perform Preventative Maintenance and Repairs: Perform manufacturer specified preventive maintenance (PM) services and safety checks on all Transit and Service vehicles. These services include performing fluid/filter changes on PM service; testing and repairing cooling systems components such as hoses; replace thermostats and heater cores; replace gas engine components such as spark plugs and coil packs and fuel injectors; diagnose and replace hydraulic brake components such as pads, rotor, brake lines and calipers; replace suspension components such as shocks and bushings; replace driveline components such as u-joints and mid-shaft bearings; replace exhaust system components such as mufflers, hangers, diesel particulate filter (DPF) and diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) filters; diagnose and repair basic automotive circuits such as headlights, brake lights, fuses and relays.

  • Clean and Maintain Shop Area: Maintain a clean and safe shop area. Assist co-workers in cleaning, organizing, sweeping, and mopping the shop area. Ensure shop floor, counters/surfaces are free of clutter, debris, and/or spills. Clean tools and shop equipment after use. Store tools and equipment in appropriate designated area.

  • Provide On-call Field Service: Respond to field calls for equipment service. Survey location and equipment for safety assurance. Perform basic on-site diagnostic procedures to determine if vehicle/equipment can be repaired on site or needs to be towed to shop. Change and repair tires, replace batteries, and jump start equipment and vehicles in the field if needed.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least six (6) months of prior automotive repair experience.
    • OR completion of a technical automotive or diesel technology training/certification program.
    • OR completion of a City of Greenville mechanic internship.
  • Completion of mechanic competency classification test at minimum of level I within six (6) months of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Over one (1) year of experience in automotive repair.
  • Experience maintaining and repairing buses or other various transit vehicles.

Driver's License Requirements

  • Valid South Carolina Class D Driver's License at hire.
  • Valid South Carolina Class B Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) within three (3) weeks of hire, or the equivalent CLP from their state of residence.
  • Valid South Carolina Class B CDL with passenger endorsement within three (3) months of hire, or the equivalent CDL from their state of residence.
  • Please be advised: Applicants who do not intend to relocate to South Carolina, must reside in a neighboring state (Georgia or North Carolina) and must meet the same CDL requirements as residents of South Carolina. In addition, employees residing in a neighboring state are required to provide to the City of Greenville an annual Motor Vehicle Record from their state’s Department of Motor Vehicles at the sole cost of the employee.

Performance Requirements

Knowledge of:

  • OSHA and safe working practices and procedures.
  • Automotive vehicle and diesel equipment service requirement and preventative maintenance procedures.

Ability to:

  • Perform multi-point vehicle/equipment inspections and identify service needs.
  • Perform tire rotations and service.
  • Respond to service calls and diagnose maintenance requirements in the field; prepare vehicles to be towed when necessary.
  • Read equipment manuals, work procedures, and policies.
  • Deal with a system of real numbers; and practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions and measurement.
  • Write reports and emails using proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar.
  • Use hand tools, nemesis/diagnostic machine, electrical power tools, pneumatic power tools, a/c recovery machine, forklift, grinders, calipers, micrometers, drill press, and hydraulic press. Desktop and laptop computers, Cummins Insight diagnostic, and fleet maintenance software.

Working Conditions

Primary Work Location: Fleet Maintenance or Transit Bus Shop. Occasional outside work.

Protective Equipment Required: Steel-toe shoes, safety glasses, ear plugs (as needed), and gloves (all provided).

Environmental/Health and Safety Factors: Occasional exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Occasional outside work. Daily exposure to extreme temperature, wetness and/or humidity, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, and physical hazards. Constant exposure to mechanical hazards, chemical hazards, electrical hazards. Frequent exposure to fire hazards and communicable diseases.

Physical Demands: Continuously requires standing, fine dexterity, walking, lifting, carrying, reaching, pushing/pulling, climbing, vision, balancing, bending, hearing, twisting, and talking. Frequently requires kneeling, crawling, foot controls, and crouching. Occasionally requires sitting, and handling. Very Heavy strength demands include exerting over 100 pounds occasionally, 50-100 pounds frequently, or from 20 up to 50 pounds constantly.

Mental Demands: Frequently requires time pressures, frequent change of tasks, irregular schedule/overtime, performing multiple tasks simultaneously, working closely with others as part of a team, tedious or exacting work, and noisy/distracting environment. Occasionally requires emergency situations.
