The U.S. Border Patrol is hiring entry-level Border Patrol Agents with opportunities for substantial incentives. Applicants will undertake law enforcement duties, including patrolling borders and apprehending noncitizens, benefiting from competitive salaries, bonuses, and robust federal benefits, alongside the opportunity for career advancement.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: Duty assignments available at the time of offer may include the Southwest Border, including prioritized locations. U.S. Border Patrol determines duty assignments based on operational needs, which may not align with candidates' first-choice preferences. Relocation may be required.
Earn up to $30,000 in recruitment incentives: Newly appointed Border Patrol Agents will be offered a $20,000 incentive, with the first $10,000 paid upon successful completion of training at the Border Patrol Academy, and the remaining $10,000 after completing a three-year service agreement. Agents accepting prioritized locations (e.g., Sierra Blanca, Presidio, Sanderson, Comstock, Freer, Hebbronville, TX; Lordsburg, NM; or Ajo, AZ) are eligible for an additional $10,000.
Applicants currently in pre-employment do not need to reapply to be eligible for the incentive.
The U.S. Border Patrol (USBP), part of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), offers a career in law enforcement with a team of highly trained professionals dedicated to protecting America. Base salaries vary by grade and location, with potential for up to 25% additional pay under the BPA Pay Reform Act. Grade levels include GL-5 ($49,739–$61,833), GL-7 ($56,623–$71,615), GL-9 ($63,148–$81,480), GS-11 ($73,939–$96,116). Promotions are available after 52 weeks in each grade. Benefits include health, dental, insurance plans, leave, and participation in the Thrift Savings Plan.
As a Border Patrol Agent, your duties include detecting, preventing, and apprehending undocumented noncitizens and smugglers, responding to alarms, interpreting physical evidence, patrolling borders and waterways, and using various assets such as vehicles, horses, watercraft, and off-road vehicles. Travel may be required.
Minimum qualifications vary by grade:
Must be a U.S. citizen, have primary residency in the U.S. for at least 3 of the last 5 years, and meet age restrictions. Veterans may be eligible for special appointments. Training includes six months at the U.S. Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, NM. Bilingual skills in Spanish and English are preferred but trainable.
