Job summary

Mead & Hunt in Portland, OR is seeking an entry-level Civil Engineer to join the Aviation group. You will design taxiways, aprons, runways, and related infrastructure, while also observing construction progress and coordinating with project teams.

The role offers mixed office and field exposure, with opportunities to develop technical and communication skills in a nationally recognized firm that values people, flexibility, and community involvement.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in civil engineering required
• EIT certification preferred
• Internship experience in civil/transportation engineering beneficial
• Proficiency in AutoCAD and Civil 3D preferred
• Strong communication and client-facing skills
• Experience with Microsoft Office suite and project software

Responsibilities

• Design aviation civil projects (taxiways, aprons, runways)
• Assist with analysis, reports, plans, schedules, and specifications
• Perform QA/QC tasks including design reviews
• Assist with construction cost estimates
• Visit project sites to monitor progress and support field tasks
• May serve as onsite project representative or client liaison

As a result, a full-time position is available for a highly motivated Entry-Level Civil Engineer to join our Aviation group at our Portland, OR office.

This exciting position offers a great mix of hands‑on learning and real‑world experience, giving you the opportunity to contribute to impactful airport project design while also getting out in the field to see your work come to life. You’ll support engineering design in the office, while also spending time onsite observing construction progress, building relationships with project teams, and gaining valuable exposure to how projects are delivered from start to finish.

Responsibilities include:

• Designing aviation civil engineering projects, which include taxiways, aprons, runways, and others.
• Assisting with analysis and preparation of reports, specifications, plans, schedules, studies,
• permits, and designs for projects.
• Performing QA/QC tasks including performing design reviews.
• Assisting with development of construction cost estimates for various projects.
• Visiting project sites to monitor progress and perform other duties per the contract
• documents.
• May serve as onsite project representative – days or nights.
• May assist with client contact and communication pertaining to specific projects.
• May attend client meetings.
• Other tasks as assigned.

A valid driver’s license, the ability to pass background checks to gain access to airport sites, and frequent travel to construction project sites approximately 50%-75% (may also include overnight stays) will be required.

The successful candidate will have the following background:

• Bachelor's degree in civil engineering from an accredited college or university completed by date of hire.

The ideal candidate will have experience in any/all the following:

• Previous related civil / transportation engineering internship(s)
• EIT certification is highly preferred
• Proficiency in AutoCAD and Civil 3D software
• Comfortable with public speaking and working in a client facing role
• Strong communication skills
• Heavy civil construction experience
• Construction field tasks including site grading, utilities, drainage, erosion control, paving, materials testing, and/or surveying
• Microsoft Excel, Word, and Project software programs

Salary Range: $74,000 - $90,000 – Actual compensation may vary due to other factors such as: experience, skill set or location.
