Job summary

North is seeking an Enterprise Merchant Underwriter (Portfolio Management) with advanced underwriting experience in the Payments industry. The role focuses on periodic reviews of high-exposure merchant relationships and presenting findings to senior management.

You will coordinate with sales partners, merchants, and internal teams, while coaching junior underwriters and ensuring service levels. Travel up to 5% is required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Finance, Accounting (or equivalent combination of education and work experience).
• Minimum 2 Years of Financial Analysis experience in the Payments industry or similar financial services field.
• Minimum 5 years of experience in a commercial underwriting environment or analyzing financial data.
• Minimum 2 years of Sales Relationship management experience highly preferred.
• Ability to interpret key financial indicators to make business decisions.
• Strong communication and relationship management skills with merchants and partners.
• Ability to handle authority when making underwriting decisions and engage with sales partners and merchants by phone and email.

Responsibilities

• Conduct periodic credit reviews within an assigned portfolio with narrative results and recommendations.
• Perform financial analysis and prepare Credit Risk Assessments with recommendations and risk mitigation.
• Analyze high exposure merchants across diverse business types and processing environments.
• Execute collateral strategies to minimize losses, including reserves and letters of credit.
• Communicate with merchants, sales representatives, internal departments, and management to obtain required documentation.
• Provide Approval Authority support for sign-off requests within your authority.
• Help train and coach underwriting team members and maintain SLAs.
• Monitor the phone queue and engage with sales partners and merchants.
• Review and update department policies based on industry trends.
• Collaborate with ERM team on enhanced due diligence and historical data reviews.

Enterprise Merchant Underwriter (Portfolio Management)North - Remote

Candidates with advanced underwriting experience in the Payments industry will be given preferred consideration.

The Portfolio Management Enterprise Merchant Underwriter role provides an optimal underwriting experience to our sales partners and merchants. The primary focus of this position is to perform a periodic review of North’s high exposure merchant relationships, working with all stakeholders in maintaining business relationships within acceptable risk parameters. This role requires the soft skills necessary to be a good ambassador for North to external parties, such as sales partners and business owners, while being capable of obtaining all necessary information to perform advanced financial analysis and risk based due diligence. Team members holding this position will process, prepare and present findings to senior management in a written format. Additional functions include the completion of the communication cycle to all stakeholders as well as performing workout functions associated with adversely rated merchants.

What you'll do:

• Conduct periodic credit reviews within an assigned portfolio and quantify results in a narrative format based on processing models, metrics and a detailed financial analysis resulting in verbal and written recommendations to management consistent with NAB’s risk appetite.
• Perform financial analysis and prepare Credit Risk Assessments of existing merchants with detailed recommendations and creative risk mitigation strategies.
• Analyze high exposure merchants with varying risk dependencies and credit quality associated with diverse business types and processing environments.
• Execute against Credit Policy driven collateral strategies to minimize losses by implementing reserves, sourcing letters of credit and/or administering funding holds.
• Communicate effectively with merchants, sales representatives, internal departments, and management as necessary to obtain financial information or other documentation necessary to complete merchant and/or applicant reviews.
• Provide Approval Authority support for sign-off requests from teammates that are above their authority but within yours.
• Help train and coach underwriting team members.
• Ensure service level agreements are met.
• Monitor the phone queue taking inbound calls and making outbound calls to sales partners and merchants.
• Review and make recommendations to update department policies and procedures based on changing industry trends or process adjustments.
• Work collectively with other ERM Department personnel for required enhanced due diligence reviews or to obtain historical data and feedback regarding assigned accounts.
• Other duties may be assigned by Portfolio Management leadership.

What we need from you:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Finance, Accounting (or equivalent combination of education and work experience).
• Minimum 2 Years of Financial Analysis experience in the Payments industry or similar financial services field.
• Minimum 5 years of experience in a commercial underwriting environment or analyzing financial data.
• Minimum 2 years of Sales Relationship management experience highly preferred.
• Effectively interprets and applies understanding of key financial indicators to make business decisions.
• Excellent conflict resolution skills and emotional intelligence to be able to manage relationships with merchants, internal staff and external customers (agents, vendors and key business partners relationships).
• Must be comfortable and confident in handling a position of authority when making underwriting decisions, as well as executing accurate judgment in regards to interactions with sales partners and merchants over the phone and through email.
• Ability to multitask, prioritize and handle combination of relationships with merchants, internal staff and external customers (agents, vendors and key business partners relationships).
• Critical thinking, troubleshooting, problem solving skills with the ability to independently solve problems using data.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with all levels of staff, management, vendors, sales agents, and merchants.
• Team-oriented individual with a positive attitude who enjoys working with and for others.
• Ability to adapt priorities for peak periods to ensure consistency of service levels for sales partners and merchants and work a flexible work schedule in support of departmental needs.

Salary Range:
