Job summary

CIRES, housed at the University of Colorado Boulder, seeks a Professional Research Assistant to create real-time ensemble tools for convection-allowing forecasts and assist with training materials for probabilistic forecast tools used by the Weather Prediction Center (WPC).

Based at WPC in Riverdale Park, MD, the role emphasizes collaboration with NOAA and CIRES staff, data post-processing, and transitioning research results into operations. Visa sponsorship is not offered.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in meteorology or related field with 2+ years of relevant experience
• Experience with large meteorological datasets (GRIB, NetCDF) and statistical methods
• Proficiency in Python and shell scripting; Linux HPC experience

Responsibilities

• Identify and develop short-range ensemble-based tools for forecast preparation
• Maintain and enhance WPC's operational forecast tools
• Collaborate to develop and transition to operations convection-allowing probabilistic forecast tools
• Develop training materials for user transition to new tools
• Collaborate on proposals and publications; attend workshops and conferences
