Job summary

Penn-Harris-Madison School Corporation is seeking an English as a New Language (ENL) Aide/Tutor to support language acquisition and academics. The role collaborates with ENL-certified teachers and general education staff to reinforce essential skills for ENL students.

The position requires 32.5 hours per week, with responsibilities including scheduling added support, maintaining ENL files, data recording, and participation in ENL staff meetings. Compensation follows the ESP Level III agreement.

Qualifications

  • Forty-eight college credit hours or ability to pass paraprofessional test.
  • Two years post secondary or bachelor's degree preferred.
  • General office skills including basic word processing, templates and spreadsheets.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Willingness to improve and/or develop job-related skills.
  • Excellent communication skills - oral, written, and interpersonal; detail oriented.
  • Complete and pass all criminal history and child abuse clearances.
  • No alcohol or nonprescribed substance abuse in the workplace.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with the ENL certified teacher to schedule added support for all assigned students.
  • Provide support to general education classrooms for identified ENL students; maintain ENL student files.
  • Record basic data and participate in ENL staff meetings for direction.
  • Work with individuals or small groups to reinforce skills introduced by teachers.
  • Assist students and teachers with information to help students adapt to a new culture.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities as appropriate.
  • Accept additional tasks to support efficient school operations.
  • Serve as liaison between faculty and students and maintain a positive rapport with the school community.
  • Follow directives from the Program Director, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction and Building Principal.

Job description

Position: English as a New Language (ENL) Aide/Tutor

Work Schedule: 32.5 hours weekly, as appropriate.

Evaluation: After 90 Days, Thereafter Annually

Reports to: Program Director of the ENL Program

Compensation: According to ESP agreement / Level III Position

Summary: Collaborate with general education classroom and certified ENL teachers as well as ENL staff to utilize instructional resource materials that will reinforce skills necessary for student success in language acquisition and academics.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Work with the ENL certified teacher to establish a schedule to provide added support to all assigned students.
  • Provide added support to general education classroom teachers for all identified ENL students. Maintain ENL student files.
  • Record basic data.
  • Attend ENL staff meetings for direction and training.
  • Work with individual or small groups of students to reinforce learning of skills initially introduced by the classroom or ENL teacher.
  • Assist students and teachers with information that will facilitate students' adjustment to a new culture.
  • Attend professional development opportunities as appropriate.
  • Accept additional tasks/duties that contribute to the efficient implementation of the corporation's organizational and educational functions.
  • Act as a liaison between faculty and students. Build and maintain a positive rapport with the school community.
  • Follow other directives from the Program Director, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction and the Building Principal that serve to improve services to the students and patrons of the Penn-Harris-Madison School Corporation.
Qualification Requirements
  • Forty-eight credit hours of college or the ability to take and successfully pass the paraprofessional test. Two years post secondary or bachelors degree preferred.
  • General office skills: provide appropriate notifications to parents, teachers and ENL office utilizing basic word processing, template and spreadsheet programs.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Willingness to improve and/or develop job-related skills.
  • Excellent communication skills-oral, written, and interpersonal. Detail oriented.
  • Excellent work habits, attendance record and successfully complete and pass all criminal history and child abuse clearances.
  • Shall remain free of any alcohol or nonprescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the Corporation.
Physical Ability
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk, and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
Sensory Requirements

Most tasks require visual perception and discrimination. All tasks require oral communications ability.

  • Tasks are regularly performed without potential exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as temperature and noise extremes, odors, humidity, vibrations, traffic hazards, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, however the noise level can vary depending upon daily activity, but will still remain within the acceptable noise level range.

Normal Concentration/intensity, which includes prolonged mental effort with limited opportunity for breaks.
