Job summary

Luma Education Recruitment is seeking an English Tutor in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire for an alternative education provider. You will deliver one-to-one English sessions to pupils aged 5 to 18, at a learning centre, in homes, and online, up to 30 hours per week, Monday to Friday during term time.

Travel between sessions is paid and fuel costs are covered. Experience with SEND and GCSE English is preferred; QTS is optional. Driving is required for home visits.

• Full UK driving licence and access to own car.
• Availability Monday to Friday during term time.

We are recruiting an English Tutor in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire for an alternative education provider that teaches children and young people who are currently out of school. You will deliver one-to-one English sessions to pupils aged 5 to 18, from early reading and phonics through to Functional Skills and GCSE English Language, at a learning centre near Huntingdon, in pupils' homes and online. Hours are flexible, up to 30 hours a week, Monday to Friday, during term time. Travel time between sessions is paid and fuel costs are covered.

About the Setting

An established alternative education and mentoring service commissioned by local authorities to support children and young people aged 5 to 18 who are out of school. Pupils include young people who have been excluded or are at risk of exclusion, children in care, and pupils with autism, ADHD, PDA or high anxiety around attending school. Sessions are one-to-one, delivered at home, in the community and at a local learning centre with classrooms, a kitchen and sports facilities.

The Role

• - Plan and teach one-to-one English lessons, from phonics and reading for younger pupils to Functional Skills and GCSE English Language
• - Assess each pupil's starting point and set short, achievable targets
• - Adapt lessons for pupils with autism, ADHD, PDA and anxiety
• - Travel between pupils' homes, community venues and the learning centre
• - Write a short report after each session and contribute to EHCP and PEP reviews
• - Work alongside mentors and the area manager to plan each pupil's return to school

What You'll Need

• - Experience teaching or tutoring English, ideally including Functional Skills or GCSE
• - A secure understanding of the English curriculum up to GCSE
• - Experience with SEND, alternative provision or pupils who are disengaged from school (desirable)
• - Availability Monday to Friday during term time, full-time or part-time
• - A full UK driving licence and your own car with business insurance
• - QTS is preferred for GCSE work but not essential – Functional Skills tutors without QTS are welcome

You’ll be patient and encouraging, and comfortable going back to basics with a pupil who hasn’t picked up a book in months.
