English-speaking Tutor for Minority Rights and Advocacy course
Location: Remote
Timeline: Planned starting date for 2025 – 1 st August 2025
Minority Rights Group is seeking to recruit a tutor for our English-language online course for human rights defenders and civil society organisation representatives on minority rights and freedom of religion or belief (FoRB) in Southeast and South Asia.
The tutor must have a strong background and demonstrated experience in human and minority rights, preferably in the Southeast and South Asia regions, with highly developed skills in communication, excellent writing, liaison and analytical skills, and ability to teach and supervise others. They will have a strong understanding of international and regional advocacy mechanisms (in particular the UN and ASEAN mechanisms) and the human and minority rights issues and challenges in these regions.
The tutor shall be responsible for overseeing course delivery, providing student support, assessment, feedback and reporting on approximately 20-25 students’ progress per course to MRG.
This programme aims to secure the right to freedom of religion or belief, and all rights of religious minorities in Asia. Freedom of religion or belief is a key component of civil and political rights, and without this protection, minorities struggle to achieve their economic, social and cultural rights. We therefore target all key actors to achieve this goal, including civil society, human rights defenders, and decision-makers at the local, national, regional and international levels.
The programme aims to achieve its goals through capacity-building, networking and awareness-raising, as well as advocacy and legal mechanisms. With capacity building at the centre of the intervention, the programme empowers civil society organisations and human rights defenders. It builds advocacy opportunities, raises public awareness and builds alliances. We also utilize strategic litigation to contribute towards repealing discriminatory laws, policies, measures and practices against persons belonging to religious minorities, also including persons with non-theistic beliefs or those who do not profess any religion or belief.
This free English-language online course addresses minority rights and FoRB in Southeast and South Asia. It offers a tutored 6-week intensive training for human rights defenders and CSO representatives in the regions.
The training covers basic concepts in human and minority rights, international and regional human and minority rights mechanisms (e.g. UN, ASEAN) with a specific focus on FoRB. It also includes a practical introduction to creating and implementing advocacy campaigns and initiatives. During the training, there will be a live webinar organized with a high-level expert. The course includes short exercises, forum discussions, and a final assignment where participants can design their own advocacy plan.
The course has at least 1 round each year over 4 years. Each round will have 20-25 participants. In 2025, 1 round will take place. Commitment for tutors is expected until the end of the programme.
