Job summary

Grand Rapids Public Schools invites applications for an English Learner (EL) Coach at the Franklin Campus Administration Building in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The EL Coach provides differentiated EL supports using the WIDA framework and SIOP to improve content access and language development district-wide.

This grant-funded, non-tenured position requires a Master’s degree in Bilingual/Multicultural Education or TESOL, at least four years of EL teaching experience, and SIOP training with coaching

Qualifications

  • Minimum four years’ experience teaching English Learners (ELs) in EL/bilingual/ESL settings.
  • Experience as a building teacher leader and/or professional development facilitator.
  • Experience writing curriculum.
  • SIOP initial training completed (or within 6 months of starting).
  • SIOP coaching training completed (or within 6 months of starting).

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with multiple Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) teachers to design SIOP-based lessons.
  • Coach SIOP trained teachers through site-visits, co-planning, co-teaching, and site-based trainings.
  • Coach content and ESL teachers in differentiating instruction, accommodations and assessments for ELs.
  • Assess and diagnose reading, writing and math deficits of ELs and recommend interventions.
  • Demonstrate model lessons using SIOP techniques.
  • Develop capacity to train and coach more teachers with EL focus.
  • Provide high-quality, ongoing professional development for Title III efforts.

ENGLISH LEARNER (EL) COACH

DEPARTMENT: English Language Learners

BARGAINING UNIT: Grand Rapids Education Association (GREA)

WAGE: Compensation is determined by a structured salary schedule. The starting salary is based on the candidate’s degree level and verified years of licensed or certificated experience.

JOB SUMMARY

The English Learner (EL) Coach provides the educational staff and district administration with core content, and second language acquisition differentiated support using the WIDA framework and the SIOP (Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol) instructional model. With the district’s academic plan as the foundation, the EL Coach designs professional development related to the WIDA Standards, Can-Do statements, SIOP’s 8 components, and 30 features to ensure that all English Learners receive meaningful content-area instruction while supporting second language development. To further support best practices for ELs, the EL Coach collaborates with district leaders to develop, implement, and monitor WIDA framework and SIOP implementation plans.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in Bilingual Education, Multicultural Education, or Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).
  • Minimum four (4) years’ experience as a classroom teacher serving English Learners (ELs) in an EL, bilingual, or ESL instructional setting.
  • Experience as a building teacher leader and/or professional development facilitator.
  • Experience writing curriculum.
  • Successfully completed SIOP initial training, otherwise must be completed within 6 months of starting.
  • Successfully completed SIOP coaching training, otherwise must be completed within 6 months of starting.

Preferred:

  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish preferred, with experience working with Spanish-speaking English Learners (ELs) and their families.
  • Skilled in the use of a range of diagnostic assessments to plan specific research-based interventions for specific scholars.
  • Experience with compiling and disaggregating data to inform instruction.
  • Computer literate with experience creating multi-media presentations, along with proficiency creating Word, Publisher, and Power Point documents.

  • Demonstrate model lessons for ESL, classroom, and content-area teachers using SIOP techniques.
  • Assist school-based teams to develop capacity to train and coach more classroom and content-area teachers.
  • Participate in the implementation of Title III through MDE and GRPS by providing high-quality, on-going professional development.
  • With the principal, a team of teachers or independently facilitate professional at staff meetings, professional development days, after school and/or during summer sessions.
  • Provide ESL consultation to private schools including WIDA screener and WIDA Access test administration and attend annual private school meetings.
  • Meet monthly with the EL District Staff (group meetings or individual meetings).
  • Submit detailed schedules weekly the EL Director and/or District Staff.
  • Consistently demonstrate dependent attendance and punctuality.
  • Perform other duties as assigned and as allowed by grant funding.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Work is performed indoors although there will be required outdoor activities.
