TYPE OF RECRUITMENT: OPEN COMPETITIVE - EMERGENCY

The LA County Board of Supervisors has ratified a Proclamation of Local Emergency due to recent windstorms and wildfires, including the Palisades and Eaton Fires. We seek qualified individuals to help mobilize resources for community recovery. This is an opportunity to directly benefit LA County residents.

The Department of Public Works is seeking qualified candidates for emergency Engineering Testing Technician vacancies related to this disaster. Under emergency order, hires may be temporary for up to 90 days with potential for permanent employment. Performance during the initial period will be evaluated, and successful candidates may be considered for permanent appointment.

Responsibilities of an Engineering Testing Technician include:

  1. Transporting soil bags (~90 lbs) to the lab for analysis.
  2. Carrying PCC cylinders and soil samples (~30 lbs) for testing.
  3. Setting up nuclear gauges (~85 lbs) for compaction testing.
  4. Digging holes (8 inches diameter, 4 feet deep) in dense soil.
  5. Sampling and testing asphalt, concrete, and their components.
  6. Inspecting galvanizing, steel reinforcing bars, and construction products.
  7. Conducting field and lab tests on soils, pipe bedding, and base materials.
  8. Performing physical tests on samples for foundations, paints, and epoxies.
  9. Other related testing and inspection duties.
  10. Performing geotechnical calculations and reports as needed.
  11. Conducting specialized tests on organics, moisture, soil classification, and gradation.

The listed duties are illustrative; other similar or related tasks may be assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Two years' experience at the level of Engineering Testing Aid III in LA County.

License: A valid California Class C Driver License or alternative transportation method is required.

Physical Class: Class IV - Arduous (heavy lifting over 25 lbs, bending, twisting, working on irregular surfaces).
