Job description

Job Title: Engineering Technician V - OMST Engineering and Maintenance (NWS 00766)

North Wind Services seeks individuals to contribute to national security within science, technology, and engineering at federal research installations supporting the Department of Energy. Opportunities range from administrative support to advanced technical roles.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens, at least 18 years old, and meet pre-employment requirements including physicals, drug screening, and background checks for DOE clearance.

Employees will work for NWS, supporting Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, CA, with day-to-day direction from lab personnel. NWS handles pay, benefits, HR, and employment management.

Position Overview

The Laser Systems Engineering and Operations division has an opening for an Engineering Technician V to support optics processing and metrology at NIF & PS. The role involves maintaining optics processing machinery, collaborating with engineering staff, and ensuring operational reliability. Some travel to vendor sites within the US is required. The facility operates 24/7, and overtime, shifts, or weekend work may be necessary, including work in radiological environments.

Essential Duties
  1. Perform electrical and electro-mechanical maintenance on standalone machines with controls, PLCs, vision systems, lasers, vacuum, and pressure controls.
  2. Process work orders and document activities via online systems.
  3. Coordinate maintenance around production schedules and vendor deliveries.
  4. Work alternate shifts, weekends, and be on-call as needed.
  5. Represent LLNL at vendor sites, performing electrical maintenance on LLNL equipment.
  6. Make repair decisions independently, escalate complex issues, and coordinate parts delivery.
  7. Update maintenance procedures, document circuits and components.
  8. Follow safety protocols for equipment involving lasers and chemicals.
  9. Interact with project teams, engineers, technicians, and designers.
  10. Perform other duties as assigned.
Skills and Qualifications
  • Journey-level experience or associate's degree in electronics or related field.
  • Intermediate knowledge of machine control systems and PLCs.
  • Experience troubleshooting complex electronic and control systems, including vacuum, pressure, and laser diagnostics.
  • Support experience with large electrical/electronic systems, fabrication, and repair.
  • Ability to interpret instructions, sketches, and schematics.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Willingness to work shifts, weekends, and be on-call.
  • Ability to travel to vendor sites.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 5-10 years in electrical or electronics maintenance.
  • Experience with motion controllers and stages (e.g., Aerotech, Newport).
  • Experience in clean rooms up to class 100.
  • Ability to troubleshoot electronics to component level.
  • Knowledge of the National Electrical Code and electrical diagnostic tools.
  • Ability to reverse engineer equipment for documentation.
Additional Requirements

Pre-placement medical exam and drug testing are required. The position requires a Q-level security clearance, which involves a background check and U.S. citizenship. Non-U.S. citizens may need to renounce other citizenships.
