Job summary

The New Mexico Department of Transportation's Survey & Lands Engineering (SLE) Division seeks an Engineering Technician to support measurement and mapping for highway projects. The role involves field surveys, data collection, and GIS support to establish project control and assist in design and construction.

The Survey & Lands Engineering (SLE) Division measures and provides geospatial information necessary for the development of design, construction, and maintenance of the New Mexico state transportation system. SLE supports all surveying and mapping activities required to fulfill the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT)'s obligation to transportation projects in the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP).

As a valued new employee to NMDOT, you may be eligible to received three (3) days of administrative leave upon your start date. This is applicable to external hires not within the State of New Mexico Government.

Why does the job exist?

This position will assist the Geodetic Control Field Unit in measuring and collecting spatial data needed to provide controlled mapping for location and right of way surveys for planning, design development, right of way acquisition/monumentation and construction of highway improvement projects.

How does it get done?

The primary responsibilities of this position will include:

• Establish a controlled survey by measuring primary project control with Survey Grade Global Positioning System (GPS) or Conventional surveying equipment.
• Utilize maps, plans, survey data, and Geographic Information System (GIS) data in order to search and or perform survey calculations in the field/office to assist in the completion of surveying and mapping activities. This is accomplished by utilizing available resources to perform tasks.
• Ensure that controlled survey data is worked with by checking primary project control that was observed with Survey Grade GPS or Conventional surveying equipment and utilized for surveying and mapping projects.
• Plan and perform all necessary tasks to complete notes with observations for a GPS control network survey to assist the Geodetic Surveyor in establishing a project control network for design and construction.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have preferred education and/or experience in the following areas:

• Topographic and route surveying to include one year in the development of topographic and location mapping plans for Highway Construction.
• Trimble GPS and Robotic Total Stations, Trimble Business Center, and AutoCAD Civil-3D.

High School Diploma or equivalent and two (2) years of relevant experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling two (2) years may substitute for the required experience.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.

Employment requires successful completion of a pre-employment physical exam and is conditional pending results.

Business Reference check and Driver's License verification are required, and employment is conditional pending results.

May require Technician Training Certification Program (TTCP) certificates within one year of hire to include but not limited to; Nuclear Densometer, Concrete Field and Lab Testing, Aggregate, Soils, Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA), Traffic Control and SWPPP.

Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily in the field in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, humidity, wind, rain and snow. May include exposure to: sunlight, dust, pollen, chemicals, rough/rugged terrain, insects and reptiles, noxious plants and infected trash; moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals and/or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals, high speed/high volume traffic and loud noises, and confined spaces; falls and bruises, considerable physical strain; standing for extended periods of time doing traffic control or walking long distances. Hand dexterity required for some duties; numerous specific vision abilities to include: close, distance, color and peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus; some climbing, reaching, kneeling and crawling to perform job duties; ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Work may also be performed in an office setting with exposure to visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage to include working with faxes, copiers and printers. May be required to work irregular hours and is subject to call outs for emergencies. Willingness to accept change of geographical assignments. Interaction with the public by phone and in person. Frequent temporary assignments that require travel and extended overnight stays to include weekends, holidays, and overtime are required.
