Job summary

Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is seeking an Engineering Technician (Nuclear) to support the Nuclear Engineering & Planning Department. You will plan, develop, and cost out work on submarine systems, ensuring timely, cost-effective solutions while coordinating with the Nuclear Project Engineer.

The role requires eligibility for federal employment, US citizenship, and the ability to obtain security clearance. Travel to CONUS/OCONUS locations may be required to meet mission needs.

Job description

Summary

You will serve as a ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN (NUCLEAR) in the NUCLEAR ENGINEERING & PLANNING DEPARTMENT of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties
  • You will plan/develop Job Summaries for design installation, test and performance of work on submarine systems and equipment involved during an availability.
  • You will scope and estimate direct labor and material costs, monitoring allotted funding to ensure over expenditures are minimized.
  • You will obtain engineering resolution to effect timely, technical cost effective solutions of problems.
  • You will assist the Nuclear Project Engineer and assure the integration of cost improvement and productivity measurements into the many different phases of planning, scheduling, directing, execution and documentation of work assigned.
Requirements
  • Must be a US Citizen.
  • Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
  • Must participate in the direct deposit pay program.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of Specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:

  • Experience developing goals and objectives that integrate organization and environmental objectives.
  • Experience researching, interpreting, analyzing and applying Federal and State Environmental Laws, Federal and State Environmental Regulations, Navy Policies and industry best practices.
  • Experience establishing policies and procedures for accomplishment of the Shipyard mission in compliance with environmental requirements.
  • Experience Planning and scheduling work in a manner that promotes a smooth flow and even distribution.
  • Experience assigning work to subordinate employees based on organization priorities and consideration of difficulty and requirements of assignments such that the experience, training, and abilities of staff are effectively utilized to meet organization and customer needs.
