• Enter project information into SAP ERP and prepare permit packages for regulatory agencies.
• Coordinate design with outside agencies and utility companies; support transition to Construction.
• Prepare routine project correspondence and visuals for presentations.

Job description

Under general supervision of the Supervisor, Water Main Design, performs advanced engineering computations, design, and drafting of water mains and related facilities.

Performs advanced engineering computations, design, and drafting of water mains and related facilities. Responsibilities include:

• Conducts field investigations to identify routing for proposed water mains and making design-related recommendations.
• Prepares preliminary cost estimates for proposed water main installation projects.
• Researches existing records, including plans, as-built drawings, maps, and otheravailable information to support project development.
• Performs calculations using field survey data for the design and drafting of watermain installation projects.
• Prepares advanced design and drafting of water main plans and profiles in AutoCADin accordance with Fairfax Water and Virginia Department of Health standards.
• Prepares plans and details for specialty water main appurtenances, including controland meter vaults, and develops maintenance of traffic plans as required.
• Prepares quantity take-offs from project plans and computing detailed cost estimatesfor water main installation projects.
• Prepares purchase requisitions and other project-related information and entering inSAP Enterprise Resource Planning software.
• Prepares and submits permit packages for the Virginia Department of Transportationand other regulatory agencies.
• Coordinates design with outside agencies, utility companies, and others.
• Coordinates with the Construction Department during the transition of projects fromdesign to construction.
• Prepares routine project correspondence, visual aids, charts, and graphics to supportcommunication and presentations.
• Participates in training and professional development opportunities to enhancetechnical skills and knowledge in civil engineering practices.
• Performs other duties as assigned or required.

• Associate’s Degree or certificate in engineering technology, CAD, drafting, or related field, plus a minimum of 6 years of working experience, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Strong knowledge of civil engineering design and drafting methods, principles andpractices, and ability to perform related tasks.
• Knowledge of utility and water main design and construction practices.
• Knowledge of survey practices and related computations.
• Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications.
• Strong knowledge of and significant experience using AutoCAD. Proficiency inMicrostation is preferred but not required.
• Strong computer skills including experience using ArcGIS, Microsoft Word and MicrosoftExcel.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers,
  supervisors and others.
• Possession of a valid driver’s license and good driving record.
• Must pass a controlled substance (drug) test for employment.
