Job Description

This intermediate level position serves as an inspector/surveyor on roadway and structure projects. Responsibilities include:

  1. Supporting engineers in highway construction administration using knowledge of construction inspection and surveying.
  2. Monitoring contractor's daily operations and reviewing tests and reports to ensure compliance with specifications, plans, and contractual provisions.
  3. Collaborating with technicians, Department employees, and contract inspectors to resolve constructability issues and troubleshoot problems.
  4. Monitoring utility relocation efforts, providing survey alignment/layout, and tracking relocation work.
  5. Anticipating contractual problems and advising on plan revisions, supplemental agreements, or other contract adjustments.
  6. Ensuring compliance with specifications, plans, contractual provisions, subcontractor agreements, and DBE requirements.
  7. Monitoring work in permitted areas to ensure adherence to NC Sedimentation and Pollution Control Act and permits.
  8. Establishing positive communication with stakeholders to minimize delays and disturbances.

Applicants should have the ability to serve as a survey crew member, work safely outdoors, and perform moderate physical activities such as walking, climbing, and standing.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Experience conducting independent, moderately complex inspections with limited supervision.
  • Skill in evaluating engineering plans, contract provisions, and inspection procedures.
  • Experience maintaining clear records and reports, including data entry.
  • Experience sampling and testing materials for acceptance.
Additional Requirements
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
  • Willingness to work nights and weekends as needed.
  • Adherence to safety protocols; safety toe shoes required.

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT's post-offer evaluation.

Education and Experience

Associate degree in Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or related field, plus two years of technician experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
