This is an entry-level Engineering Technician I position located in the Newton Residents Office in Catawba County. Employee in this position will support higher level technicians and Engineers in areas such as construction, materials sampling and testing, construction traffic control, design, surveys, and/or program/regulatory compliance. Responsibilities include performing standardized tests, accurate record keeping, and making measurements and calculations of pay quantities to ensure contractor compliance and proper project documentation. Employee must obtain and maintain certifications for material sampling and testing. Duties may include assisting in project survey work using various surveying equipment including GPS, performing calculations for contract pay quantities, inspection for compliance, data collection and analysis, and other related tasks. The employee is expected to work independently, read resource materials, communicate effectively both orally and in writing, and have computer experience including iPad and related software. Maintaining positive working relationships is essential.

Responsibilities include placing survey stakes, operating surveying instruments, cutting brush, testing materials, inspecting roadway and bridge projects, and performing manual tasks in outdoor environments with exposure to hazards including traffic, heights, and rough terrain. Must be able to perform moderate physical activities and work in extreme weather conditions, including nights and weekends. A valid NC Driver’s License is preferred. Safety shoes are recommended. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post-employment evaluation.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. See oshr.nc.gov/experience-guide for details.
