Description of Work

This position with NCDOT offers full State Benefits , competitive salaries and many career development opportunities.

Position will assist in the inspection of encroachments and driveway permits in Cleveland and Gaston Counties. Position will also perform entry-level technical work involving sampling of materials, testing, and inspection duties to determine adherence to codes/standards by both DOT and private contractors.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities / Competencies

Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Experience in inspecting contract work.
  • Basic knowledge of NC DOT driveway and encroachment policies.
  • Experience working in a team environment to complete assignments.
  • Experience in customer service related to resolving problems that involves explaining complicated engineering concepts to various customer groups.
  • Computer experience including office software and drafting software.

Additional Expectations

Ability to conduct routine inspections for compliance with standards, specifications, and compliance with terms of encroachment agreement/driveway permit. Knowledge and understanding of general concepts, practices, and theories used in highway/utility construction and in general highway maintenance. Effectively communicate to express routine or simple technical concepts and related facts in a concise, organized, and persuasive manner. Have ability to read and interpret construction plans, and general knowledge of mathematical functions. Emergency work includes snow and ice removal. Employee may be required to work at any time, including nights, weekends, and holidays to fulfill inspection and surveying needs. Employee may be subject to outside environmental conditions, noise, and hazards from vehicles and construction machinery. A valid Class "C" Driver's License is preferred. Safety toe shoes needed.

Associate’s Degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or assigned discipline from an appropriately accredited institution, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
