The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) is seeking an Engineering Technician to support higher-level technicians in inspecting structural fabrication at plants across Louisiana and neighboring states. The role focuses on quality, safety, and compliance with DOTD standards, with potential assignments elsewhere in the U.S.

Advancement is based on experience, training, and performance. Location is Section 40, Construction, with a premium pay of $2.00/hour for hours worked.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required, or six months of sub-professional engineering experience.
  • Ability to follow instructions and maintain inspection records.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects fabricated structural members for compliance with standards.
  • Verifies raw materials are sampled, tested, approved, and traceable.
  • Inspects bed layouts, steel spacing, strand placement, and stressing procedures.
  • Assesses concrete quality, welding procedures, workmanship, painting, and assembly.
  • Ensures products meet quality, safety, and construction standards.
  • Verifies proper shipping procedures to avoid damage and delays.
  • Maintains field book inspection reports and documentation.
  • Scans inspection records into the Archive System.
  • Inspects stored products to support stockpile payment.
  • Assists in training lower-level technicians and completes required training.

At the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD), we plan, build, maintain, and protect the transportation systems that connect communities, support commerce, and keep Louisiana moving. The Engineering Technician position supports higher-level technicians in performing structural fabrication inspections and are assigned to steel, precast, and prestressed fabrication plants to inspect structural members used in construction of bridges and other State infrastructure projects. These fabrication plants are located throughout Louisiana and neighboring states, with occasional assignments involving plants located elsewhere in the United States. Advancement through the Engineering Technician training series is based on required experience, completion of structured training courses, and satisfactory work performance. The position is located in Section 40, Construction, and reports to the Engineering Technician 7. Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a high school diploma or GED; OR Six months of experience in sub-professional engineering, heavy mobile equipment operation, or mobile equipment maintenance.

  • Inspects fabricated structural members to ensure compliance with DOTO standards and specifications.

  • Verifies that raw materials are properly sampled, tested, approved, and traceable.

  • Inspects bed layouts, steel spacing, strand placement, and stressing procedures for compliance.

  • Evaluates concrete quality, welding procedures, workmanship, painting, and final assembly.

  • Ensures fabricated products meet required quality, safety, and construction standards.

  • Verifies proper shipping procedures to prevent damage, delays, and costly project impacts.

  • Maintains accurate field book inspection reports and supporting documentation.

  • Scans and indexes inspection records and documents into the Archive System.

  • Inspects stored structural products for quality and accuracy to support stockpile payment approval.

  • Assists in training lower-level technicians and completes required structured training and professional development.



Position-Specific Details


Appointment Type:

This position may be filled as either a probational appointment (open to all qualified applicants); a promotion (open to all statewide classified and Agency-wide permanent status employees); or by detail to special duty.



Compensation:

This position receives a premium pay of $2.00/hour for hours actually worked. Additional compensation may be considered impart with extraordinary qualifications in accordance with State Civil Service Rules and DOTD policy.
