Job summary

The Columbia, SC office of Schnabel Engineering is seeking an Engineering Technician to join our growing geotechnical practice. We are looking for motivated candidates with attention to detail and a desire to develop as part of a strong team.

Responsibilities include field observation and testing of soils and materials, data collection and instrumentation maintenance, and laboratory testing with reporting. The role offers growth in an employee-owned, collaborative environment with a solid

Qualifications

  • Prior experience on construction projects (minimum 2 yrs preferred).
  • Technician certification (ACI, SCDOT or AASHTO).
  • 40 Hour HAZWOPER Certification or ability to obtain within 6 months.
  • MSHA 24 Training or ability to obtain within 6 months.
  • Excellent mathematical computation skills.
  • High School diploma required.
  • Valid US Driver’s License.
  • Able to lift 50–75 pounds and work outdoors on construction sites.
  • Basic knowledge of soil and concrete laboratory testing.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Attention to detail and well-organized.
  • Strong work ethic and desire to perform at a high level.
  • Basic understanding of and ability to use hand tools.

  • Collect data, maintain, and troubleshoot geotechnical instrumentation.
  • Collect environmental water and soil samples from monitoring wells, borings, excavations, drains, and surface water bodies.
  • Perform laboratory soils and concrete testing.
  • Prepare reports documenting observations and test results.
  • Communicate with contractors and engineers to discuss observations and test results.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Field observation and testing during placement of construction materials including soil, concrete, asphalt, masonry and reinforcing steel

Required Skills/Experience:
  • Prior experience on construction projects (minimum 2 yrs is preferred)
  • Technician certification (ACI, SCDOT or AASHTO)

  • MSHA 24 Training or the ability to obtain in 6 months
  • Excellent mathematic computational skills

  • Valid US Driver’s License
  • Possess good oral, written, communication, skills
  • Candidates must be able to lift 50 - 75 pounds on an occasional basis and be physically able to negotiate construction sites, climb ladders and work outside.
  • Basic Knowledge of Soil and Concrete Laboratory testing
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a multidisciplinary, multi-office team
  • Attention to detail and well-organized
  • Strong professional work ethic and desire to perform at a high level
  • Basic understanding of and ability to use of hand tools
Other Requirements:
  • Ability to pass a background check which may include criminal history, motor vehicle record, and credit check
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment screening

The compensation range for this position is between $16/hr to $22/hr . Compensation for this position may vary based on geographic location and other factors. We remain committed to providing competitive and equitable compensation to all employees, regardless of their location.
