Job summary

Thea Energy seeks an Engineering Technician to build, operate, and maintain complex mechanical and electrical systems in our Kearny, NJ facility. You will help develop new equipment, tools, procedures, and inspection techniques to shorten production time while upholding high quality.

Ideal candidates bring 5+ years in shop fabrication or high-tech manufacturing, plus experience with PLC/HMI controls and process equipment. Strong problem-solving and tool-management skills are essential.

Qualifications

  • High-school diploma or equivalent.
  • 5+ years in shop fabrication, manufacturing, or high-tech industry.
  • 5+ years in mechanical/electrical systems, high vacuum/cryogenic systems, or related fields.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office suite.

Engineering Technician

Kearny, NJ

Technology – Manufacturing Engineering / Full-time / On-site

Thea Energy is leveraging recent breakthroughs in stellarator physics and engineering to create a faster and simpler approach to commercializing fusion energy. The company is reinventing the stellarator using computer-controlled arrays of planar coils thereby replacing the intricate, complex modular magnets required in all other stellarator architectures. Thea Energy is on a mission to create a limitless source of zero emission energy for a sustainable future.

Position Overview
  • Build, operate, maintain, and troubleshoot complex mechanical and electrical systems
  • Assist in developing new equipment, tools, procedures, and inspection techniques to reduce production time while maintaining high quality
  • Responsible for tool and workspace organization and maintenance
  • Assemble and troubleshoot test articles and supporting test equipment
  • Collaborate to support development of manufacturing processes and tooling
Required Experience & Skillsets
  • High-school diploma or equivalent
  • 5+ years of experience in shop fabrication, manufacturing, research, or high-tech industry
  • 5+ years of technical experience with any of the following:mechanical or electrical systems, high pressure or high vacuum systems, cryogenic systems, plumbing, soldering, system testing, power or controls systems
  • Comfortable working to aggressive deadlines and exceptional work ethic
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite tools or similar software
Ideal Experience
  • Knowledge of quality control and inspection procedures
  • Experience operating, maintaining, or troubleshooting or programming automation equipment, e.g. PLC, HMI, or process controllers
  • Experience with reflow solder processes, including PCBA manufacturing
  • Crane or lifting experience
  • Forklift experience
  • Experience with electrical schematic and wiring
  • Experience using various types of hand tools and precision measuring tools
  • Experience in documenting, improving, and implementing process instructions
  • Experience with reading and reviewing mechanical drawings
  • Experience with machining, operating manual milling, saws, and other tools

$30 - $43 an hour

Requirements
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to perform activities such as typing, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time
  • Willingness to occasionally travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call
  • Ability to work in a facility that contains industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics
