We offer a hybrid 3-2 work schedule (three days in the office, two days of teleworking) to accommodate the need for flexibility.

Military service members and veterans with ranks from E5-E9, W1-CW5, or O3-O6, plus appropriate equivalent combination of education and years of experience as outlined below will be considered for this opportunity.

Job Summary

This role is the top progression level in the Engineering Technical Specialist series. Distinguished from the Engineering Technical Specialist II by the increased complexity in the application of technical and engineering skills and knowledge. Performs difficult and complex work requiring strong technical skills and significant knowledge and experience within the functional area or specific engineering discipline. This role does not function as a technician in modifying, operating or maintaining systems or equipment.

Excellent organizational skills and experience in managing projects are a must. Technical project management skills include developing sourcing strategies, vendor qualification reviews, cost tracking, and oversight of complex projects to meet customer’s cost and time objectives.

Role focused on support activities related to the Subsequent License Renewal (SLR) projects at Surry and N. Anna Power Stations.
Provides expert technical support, direction, and advice in analyzing and evaluating systems, equipment, and programs for procurement technical and quality requirements.
Plans and conducts work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, adaptation, and modification of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria.
Devises new approaches to problems encountered and develops engineering criteria ensuring compliance with design criteria and standards.
Implements technology within an engineering field.
Applies scientific and engineering principles and methods, along with technical skills, to support engineering activities.
May perform product improvement, testing, field engineering, development, manufacturing, construction, systems development, quality control, and operational engineering.
May perform some design and theoretical work but does not possess the educational background to function as an engineer.
May perform same work as titled Engineers but possesses an engineering degree which is not ABET accredited.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

5-6+ years of relevant experience and demonstrated competencies in applicable discipline.

  • In-depth knowledge of engineering principles, theories, and practices.
  • Ability to apply knowledge, techniques, skills, and modern tools of mathematics, science, engineering, and technology to solve broadly defined engineering problems appropriate to the discipline.
  • Ability to design systems, components, or processes meeting specified needs for broadly defined engineering problems appropriate to the discipline.
  • Strong oral, written, and graphical communication skills including technical writing; ability to identify and use appropriate technical literature.
  • Ability to conduct standard tests, measurements, and experiments.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret the results to improve processes.
  • Ability to function effectively independently and as a member of a technical team.
  • Excellent organization and project management skills.
  • Excellent personal computer skills including knowledge of applicable software programs.

In order to be a titled Engineering Technical Specialist, you must meet one of the following criteria:

  • 4-year Engineering Technology degree or 4-year degree in Engineering (not ABET-accredited); or
  • 4-year degree in Physics, Math, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Engineering or other technical related discipline; or
  • 4-year non-technical degree and post-graduate degree in Engineering Technology or Engineering (not ABET-accredited); or
  • Equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred degree.

Must successfully pass all course testing requirements in the Engineering Support Personnel Orientation (ESPO) training program to qualify for this nuclear support role.

Education Requirements

Degree or an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated related experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred level of education:

Bachelor’s degree.

Preferred Disciplines: Engineering Technology, Physics, Biology, Computer Engineering.

Other disciplines may be substituted for the above.
