Job summary

The East Tennessee Children's Hospital Association, Inc. is seeking a skilled maintenance technician to perform preventive and corrective maintenance on facility systems, with emphasis on HVAC, electrical and plumbing, and related controls.

You will troubleshoot, repair and install equipment to ensure reliable operation in patient care areas. This role requires a High School diploma or GED, 5 years of facility maintenance experience, and a valid TN driver license.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Provides correct and timely maintenance of facility heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, and related control systems.
  • Responds to calls from facility departments requesting immediate assistance for HVAC and refrigeration problems.
  • Installs air conditioning, refrigeration, temperature, humidity control systems and accessories correctly.
  • Repairs electric motors, controllers and other auxiliary electrical devices.
  • Installs new wiring and electrical machinery; works from prints and diagrams to determine layout, location, and specifications of items to install.
  • Dismantles electrical machinery, breaks connections, replaces defective parts, reassembles, and tests for proper operation.
  • Maintains the facility’s electrical distribution systems according to national, state, and local electrical codes and regulatory agencies.
  • Maintains facility nurse call system, paging, mechanical alarm and medical gas alarm systems.
  • Checks and repairs lighting systems accurately and in a timely manner; isolates and repairs defective circuits as required.

BASIC PURPOSE OF THE JOB

Performs preventative and corrective maintenance on equipment and buildings. Demonstrates proficient knowledge to troubleshoot and repair systems and equipment on an in-depth level.

Reports to: Engineering Manager.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
  • Supervisory Responsibilities: NO
  • Minimum Education: High School Diploma/GED
  • License/Certification Required: Valid TN Driver License
  • Minimum Work Experience: 5 years experience in facility maintenance required.
  • Technical training required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Proficiency in 2 or more of the following: HVAC, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, electronics, fire alarm systems, pneumatic tube system, BAS, controls.
  • Must maintain schedule flexibility, assisting in coverage of other shifts when needed.
  • Will be required to cover on‑call in the technician rotation and respond when necessary.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Dismantles electrical machinery, breaks connections, replaces defective parts, reassembles, and tests for proper operation.
  • Maintains the facility’s electrical distribution systems according to national, state, and local electrical codes and regulatory agencies.
  • Maintains facility nurse call system, paging, mechanical alarm and medical gas alarm systems.
  • Checks and repairs lighting systems accurately and in a timely manner, isolating and repairing defective circuits as required.
  • Installs concealed wiring according to codes and procedures, correctly bends and installs conduit.
  • Maintains work area and equipment in a clean and orderly condition following all prescribed regulations.
  • Assists with inclement weather conditions.
  • Assists the fire alarm testing company, as needed, to maintain the facility fire alarm system: conducts fire protection system tests according to policies and procedures.
  • Conducts daily rounds of building and related equipment as assigned by Lead Engineering Technician, reporting any complications on specific jobs or equipment.
  • Consults with Lead Engineering Technician if unsure of action to take.
  • Maintains and repairs central clock system in a timely manner.
  • Repairs or replaces defective plumbing equipment.
  • Coordinates shutdown of various plumbing systems, as needed: natural gas, medical gases (e.g., oxygen, air and vacuum), heating systems, outside utilities, sewer and storm drains, gas, water, water distillers, renal dialysis equipment, various pumps, hot and cold water tanks and systems, drain cleaning, steam piping, water booster systems, fire protection, and piping for machinery.
  • Maintains competencies and performs Engineering Tech I duties correctly, as required.
  • Cooperates with members of the department and facility on all emergency conditions regarding patient, visitor and staff safety.
  • Coordinates effectively with other departmental employees on diversified work projects.
  • Fosters mature professional relationships with fellow employees in a courteous, friendly manner as measured by management observation and peer input.
  • Willingly accepts any other assignment that may be requested.
  • Ensures necessary stock and tools are available to maintain, repair, or replace malfunctioning equipment.
  • Utilizes hospital resources and time respectfully and accountably.
  • Accurately reflects time worked in the work order system.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Light lifting, pushing and pulling is required for 10‑20lbs occasionally and frequent moving of objects of less than 10lbs is required.

Frequent sitting with some walking, standing, squatting, bending and reaching is required.
