Job summary

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, District 08-Unit 002 in Alexandria, seeks an Engineering Tech Consultant to support the District Traffic Operations Engineer with complex reviews, detour plans, crash research, and TMP preparation. This hands-on field role emphasizes safety, detail, and documentation.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED plus four years of sub‑professional engineering experience; OR
• Six months of sub‑professional engineering experience, heavy mobile equipment operation, or mobile equipment maintenance plus four years of sub‑professional engineering experience; OR
• Twenty‑four semester hours in one of the specialized fields listed; OR
• A bachelor's degree in engineering, engineering technology, construction management or construction technology.

Responsibilities

• Assist DTOE with complex assignments by independently managing delegated internal and external requests (plan reviews, construction project traffic control reviews, detour plans, crash research, and TMPs).
• Respond to public requests by conducting traffic operations studies and preparing reports with recommendations per directives and standards.
• Conduct complex traffic operations studies in traffic signals, posted speed requests, and intersection modifications.
• Provide on-the-job training or assistance to newer or lower-level technicians.
• May be required to perform other duties including emergency/disaster support activities.

The overall function of this position is to serve as a primary assistant to the District Traffic Operations Engineer (Engineer 7 DOTD) and/or Assistant District Traffic Operations Engineer and provide functional supervisor over lower-level technicians in District 08. The employee will be required to carry out highly complex and technical assignments requiring the demonstrated ability to interpret, select, adapt and apply diverse engineering guidelines, precedents, principles and practices to non-routine, highly specialized situations; to serve as a technical expect, advisor or consultant to other agency staff and/or consultants or contractors in a highly technical engineering specialty or program function in the District.

This is a hands-on field role

that requires attention to detail, safety awareness, and strong documentation skills.

Position is located in Rapides District 08/Unit 002 and report to Engineer 6.

Minimum Qualifications

Depending On Assignment, Engineering Tech Consultant May

• Assist DTOE with complex assignments by independently managing delegated internal and external requests. Internal requests consist of plan reviews, construction project traffic control reviews, detour plans, crash research, and preparation of transportation management plans (TMP’s)
• Respond to public request by independently conducting traffic operations studies in the areas of roadway signs and pavement markings then prepares written reports summarizing the analysis of collected data making recommendations in accordance with Chief Engineer’s Engineering Directives and Standards Manual and Manual on uniform Traffic Control Devices to the District Traffic Operations Engineer (DOTD Engineer 7) or his Engineering Staff.
• Conduct complex traffic operations studies in the area of traffic signals request, traffic signal and intersection modifications, and posted speed requests.
• Provide on‑job training or assistance to newer or lower level technicians.
• May be required to perform other duties as necessary including, but not limited to, emergency/disaster support activities.

Position-Specific Details

Compensation:

Engineering Tech Consultant – $53,498.00 Annual + premium pay $1.00/Hours Worked

Additional compensation may be considered in part with extraordinary qualifications in accordance with State Civil Service Rules and DOTD policy.

Appointment Type:

This position may be filled as either a probational appointment (open to all qualified applicants); a promotion (open to all statewide classified and Agency‑wide permanent status employees); or by detail to special duty.
