The City of Jefferson is seeking an Engineering Survey Technician in the Public Works - Engineering Dept. The role performs preliminary surveys, construction staking, as-built surveys, and right of way surveys using total station, engineering level, field notebook and CAD tools.
Responsibilities include setting control points, inspecting projects for city approval, maintaining survey records, and CAD data creation.
The City of Jefferson is currently accepting applications for an Engineering Survey Technician for the Public Works- Engineering Dept. The Survey Technician will perform preliminary surveys, construction staking, as-built surveys, right of way staking and city property surveys by operating total station, engineering level, field notebook and computer and keep survey notes; make required computations; maintain survey records; and inspect major public works projects and construction projects submitted for city approval and note changes or revisions and unauthorized deviations.
Conducts property research including plats, subdivisions, deeds, and rights of way.
Conducts preliminary surveys of construction sites by operating engineering level, and computer to determine control points and locate objects above and below ground so accurate plans, profiles, and cross-sections can be generated.
Conducts construction staking by consulting with Registered Land Surveyor, plans and sets centerline, constructs stakes and/or offset stakes with grades from control points. Sets hubs and lathes with fills and cuts and explains staking to contractor. Operates GPS equipment as needed.
Conducts right of way surveys and determines new control loops used to determine control points for future projects.
Downloads electronic field book to computer and establishes accurate records, cleans and maintains equipment, and orders supplies.
Operates computer aided drafting (CAD) programs to import and export survey data, including the manipulation and editing of field data, and the creation of survey points and data from existing CAD drawings.
Requires a valid Missouri driver's license and a high school diploma or equivalent and four years' experience in technical engineering and surveying work or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be willing to actively pursue the curriculum necessary to qualify for and pass the Land Surveyor in Training (LSIT) exam with the goal of becoming a registered Professional Land Surveyor (PLS).
Ability to carry 50 pounds of equipment over rough terrain; use 10 pound sledge hammer; clear brush with a chainsaw and/or machete; enter and exit manholes and ditches; traverse steep slopes and/or stand at equipment for extended periods; use and care for surveying equipment; and work in extreme weather conditions for extended periods.
Ability to calculate grades and set control points without error; and communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Must have knowledge of the methods, practices, and techniques of surveying; knowledge of the basic principles and practices of civil engineering; and the ability to interpret engineering plans, drawings, specifications, and field notes.
