Job summary

The City of New York's Department of Buildings seeks an Assistant Commissioner for Engineering Services who will oversee engineering operations citywide. You will drive long-term planning for Cranes & Derricks, Construction Safety Engineering, and related units, ensuring compliance with construction codes and safety standards.

Under the Associate Commissioner, you’ll guide policy development, manage senior staff, and coordinate with agencies like NYCEM and DOT.

Qualifications

• Requires a baccalaureate degree in engineering and four years of relevant building design/construction experience, plus 18 months in admin/management roles.
• Requires at least 4 years of operational experience managing teams in large organizations.

Responsibilities

• Oversee and develop long-term planning and strategic development for four units: Cranes & Derricks, Construction Safety Engineering, Concrete Enforcement Engineering, and Sidewalk Shed Construction Progress Monitoring.
• Analyze engineering protocols and supervise training of technical staff within the department.
• Collaborate with unit managers on enforcement and code development, and revisions for construction safety and cranes/derricks.
• Audit construction documents for compliance with codes; coordinate policy development and procedural changes.
• Develop project plans with schedules, costs, resources, and roles; execute division strategic plans.
