IKO Industries in Sumas, WA is offering an Engineering & Safety Internship for students local to Washington. Working with Process Engineers and HSE professionals, you will support safety initiatives and act on operational improvements in a manufacturing setting.

This part-time internship provides hands-on experience, development of JHAs and SWIs, 5S and continuous improvement projects, and potential future opportunities after graduation.

Qualifications

  • Pursuing a relevant engineering or safety-related degree.
  • Demonstrated organizational and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong written communication and technical documentation interest.
  • Comfortable in a manufacturing environment.
  • Proficient with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience reading or working with engineering drawings and P&IDs is an asset.
  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing or 5S is an asset.
  • Attention to detail and ability to work independently and with others.

Responsibilities

  • Support plant safety and operational improvement initiatives alongside Process Engineers and HSE.
  • Develop and maintain Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and Safe Work Instructions (SWIs).
  • Create JHAs and SWIs for new and existing equipment.
  • Support the plant's 5S program through audits, documentation, and improvement efforts.
  • Identify opportunities to improve workplace organization, efficiency, and safety.
  • Assist with equipment labeling projects for safety, maintenance, and process identification.
  • Support P&ID reviews and updates to keep documentation current.
  • Conduct plant walkthroughs to identify safety, process, and operational improvements.
  • Collect, organize, and analyze data to support engineering and safety projects.
  • Collaborate with operations, maintenance, engineering, and HSE on special projects.

WHEN YOU JOIN US, YOU WILL BE:
  • Working alongside Process Engineers and HSE professionals to support plant safety and operational improvement initiatives

  • Conducting plant walkthroughs to identify safety, process, and operational improvement opportunities
  • Collecting, organizing, and analyzing data to support engineering and safety projects
  • Collaborating with operations, maintenance, engineering, and HSE teams on various special projects
  • Supporting continuous improvement initiatives across the facility
OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE:
  • Currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Process Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Occupational Health & Safety, or a related discipline
  • Strong organizational and problem‑solving skills
  • Strong written communication skills with an interest in technical documentation
  • Comfortable working in a manufacturing environment
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Experience reading or working with engineering drawings and P&IDs is an asset
  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing or 5S principles is an asset
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work both independently and collaboratively
